Rising young romantic idol John Ashley again displays his flair for comedy as he teams with Jody McCrea’s “Deadhead” to provide some of the funniest scenes in the new musical comedy. One of the most important roles in “Muscle Beach Party,” that of Jack Fanny who trains the musclemen of the story, goes to top night club comedian Don Rickles. Rickles is at his funniest in this, his film first comedy role. Making his film debut in the musical is Broadway comedy star Peter Turgeon, who left the cast of Sid Caesar’s hit, “Little Me” to star in this film. The musical and dancing favorites of “Beach Party” also return in “Muscle Beach Party’ — Dick Dale and his Del-Tones and the twisting Condy Johnson — to guarantee a full quota of melody and excitement in the new musical comedy. * 8 8 & SURFING, ROMANCE, FUN MIX WITH MUSCLEMEN, MUSIC IN "MUSCLE BEACH PARTY" OPENING HERE TOMORROW Mix a bevy of surfing and beach guys and gals with a group of musclebound physical culturists, and a man-crazy Italian Countess and her wacky business manager to the group with plenty of gags, songs and dances, and you have the fun-filled ingredients of American International’s ‘Muscle Beach Party.” The color and Panavision musical comedy, opening here tomorrow at thé 2-5 22 Be ce ee theatre, stars Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Luciana Paluzzi, John Ashley, Don Rickles, Peter Turgeon, and Jody McCrea. “Muscle Beach Party’ also stars Dick Dale, Candy Johnson and Morey Amsterdam; introduces “Little Stevie’ Wonder and _ headlines Buddy Hackett as “‘the rich business manager.” The film’s gay story tells of two young lovers (Avalon and Funicello) — he a surfing bug and she a love-struck beauty — whose lives become entangled with a group of musclemen and the Countess. The resulting confusion, liberally interspersed with comedy, song and dance, is finally resolved happily for all concerned. “Muscle Beach Party” was directed by William Asher of “Beach Party” fame.
