The Samuel Bronston presentation in Super Technirama Technicolor marks the first time that the tale of the courageous warrior’s exploits on the battlefield and his undying love for the beautiful Chimene has been brought to the screen, But through the centuries, much has been written about El Cid, who united Christian and Moor to bring final defeat to the blackrobed Islamic hordes who crossed the Mediterranean, invaded the kingdom of Spain and were intent upon making a dagger-like thrust into the very heart of Europe. Few are the figures in history who have stirred the imagination of poets, dramatists and balladeers as much as did this invincible warrior, born Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar. Rodrigo was first acclaimed “El Cid” by his Moorish enemies; it is a term adapted phonetically from the Arabic “Seid,’ which means lord or leader. Heston is cast as tthis warrior who dreamed of peace for his land and fought brilliantly to finally achieve it. Miss Loren portrays the fiery and proud Castilian noblewoman Chimene caught up in a strange but lasting romance with him. Chimene’s love for El Cid at first was tender and warm, and then after he was forced to kill her father it burst into a consuming hate and almost fatal revenge; her ordered marriage to him began in deep bitterness, but her old love for him was renewed and grew strong enough to endure a long separation, lonely exile and the gnawing anxieties when he went into battle. Beginning with the _ classic “Poema del Cid,’ written in the 12th Century, the story of Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar has been kept alive by the beautiful Corneille play, “Le Cid,’ and such operas as Massenet’s “Le Cid’ and Cornelius’ “Der Cid.” For the current cinema specta cle, El Cid’s story was written by Academy Award winners Fredric M. Frank and Philip Yordan. His opponent is Don Martin, giant champion of King Ramiro of Aragon. He is played by Christopher Rhodes. Overlooking the block-long jousting field where the two men fought viciously is the beautiful Belmonte castle, one of many Spanish castles used during the filming of the epic story. Legends Gather Around ‘Cid’ Producer Bronston To the motion picture industry, Samuel Bronston is a figure with a good deal of the same magnetic attraction that distinguishes the warrior hero of his own spectacular presentation, “‘E] Cid,” opening a special engagement at brig) air oe on eee ee theatre on record as a road show attraction in many key cities. History depicts the llth century knight portrayed by Charlton Heston opposite Sophia Loren in the Super Technirama Technicolor film as an inspiring new kind of leader looming up in Spain’s hour of trial to rally her forces and drive the darkness, embodied by the blackclad invading hosts of Islam, right out of the country. With such pictures as “El Cid,” “King of Kings,’ and other grandscale productions programmed to follow, Bronston emerges in the bold, imaginative, large thinking character of the industry’s leaders of old, but with a significant, latter-day difference. “This is a man,” they will tell you in Hollywood, “of background, culture, and exquisite taste.” And, in fact, his cinematic subjects, the knowledgeable care with which they have quite evidently been researched, and the polish of the finished creations bear them out. But the fascination exerted by the man on the industry proceeds from something additional — the box-office returns from his pictures. There is no darkness anywhere around Samuel Bronston. And that fact tends both to bear out his own concept of the movies as the greatest form of popular entertainment yet devised, and to justify his respect for the intelligence and taste of their audience. A quiet, soft-spoken man, Bronston was reared in Paris and educated at the Sorbonne, where he majored in political science, art, in ee eae after a glittering and music, His career as a producer dates from a meeting in Paris with the widow of Jack London. Out of it came the picture, “Jack London,” followed by “Martin Eden” and “Walk in the Sun.” A few years ago he was selected by the Holy See to prepare a color documentary dealing with its art treasures. His moving execution of the commission called forth high critical praise and Vatican commendation, In 1958 he organized his own company in Madrid, and “El Cid” and “King of Kings” have catapulted it and him to the status of international giants in the industry. Bronston is what is called a “personal producer,” meaning that he is not content to engage the services of artists and artisans and let a film take its course. From beginning to end, and in all its details, a Bronston production bears the impress of the mind and personality of the producer. On his schedule now are “55 Days At Peking,” another major uridertaking with Charlton Heston starring for him again, this time in a story of China’s dramatic Boxer uprising; a picture on the fall of the Roman Empire, and one on the French Revolution. “El Cid” is a Samuel Bronston Production in association with Dear Film Productions, It was directed by Anthony Mann, and is being distributed in the Western Hemisphere by Allied Artists.
