The high-wire performer, the first victim, is replaced by Frank Hawkins, an even more daring artist, whose attentions to Monica make Dorando, her business manager, jealous. In shockingly brutal fashion, Dorando, too, meets a tragic end, bringing Police Superintendent Brooks to the scene. When Frank threatens to tell the police that he has seen her destroy Dorando's partnership agreement, Monica offers him a share of the circus. At this juncture, Monica's rebellious young daughter, Angela, is expelled from boarding school and persuades Monica she should be allowed to stay with the circus. Matilda, who is nightly sawn in half in an illusionist act, is the next murder victim. Then, while Frank is doing his wire-walking above a field of upraised bayonets, a knife flies into his back. Superintendent Brooks uncovers the identity of the killer in a surprising climax.
