When Ann Lake comes to a nursery school in the:Hampstead area of London to collect her four-year-old daughter, Bunny,"’she is unable to find her. She is told by everyone at the school, from the deputy head mistress down, ‘there is no record of the child having been brought to the school that morning for registration by her mother, as Ann claims. Nor can Ann's brother, Steven, an American journalist whom his sister is visiting, cast any light on the mystery. Called in to investigate the enigma, Inspector Newhouse of Scotland Yard also is unable to produce evidence Bunny was ever enrolled at the school. He hints that the whole story could be a figment of the young unmarried mother's imagination, even that Steven could be shielding his sister from any revelation the child is illusory.
