He works in Mr. Foreman's machine shop, has a girl named Wanda and parents who want him to study pharmacy. Egged on by his friend Marvin, David applies for an audition with Mr. Marlowe, an alcoholic ham who stages flamboyant "'society" plays in a rundown theatre, with his daughter Angela as leading lady and Pike as his cynical stage manager. Angela persuades her father to accept the attractive young amateur on a "'scholarship."' David will pay Marlowe only $5 a week to act, and he will need to supply a tuxedo for his first "professional'' appearance. There follows a series of frustrations: lack of money, ineptitude at rehearsals, the need to deceive Mr. Foreman as well as his parents about what he is doing, Wanda's jealousy because David must kiss Angela in public. Miss B., a luscious bookkeeper who has enjoyed David's calf worship, persuades her boss to lend David his own tuxedo the night of the boy's debut performance. In his ill-fitting costume, David is an almost total disaster. However, David does win enthusiastic applause from his parents and from Marvin and Wanda, all of whom later approve when David kisses Wanda .. . in public. Running Time: | 12 minutes Page 7
