THE STORY
From National Screen
lj
(Not for Publication) It is early morning. In New York, General Black bids his wife goodbye before flying to Washington for a meeting in the Pentagon War Room. In Washington, Groeteschele leaves a society party where he has been discussing the importance of bombing the Soviet Union before they bomb America, to find socialite Ilsa Wolfe waiting in his car; his talk of multi-million deaths has aroused her. In Omaha, Col. Cascio leaves the $.A.C. headquarters for a hurred visit to the drunken, dissolute parents he is ashamed to acknowledge; he is found there by his superior, General Bogan, when word comes that Senator Raskob is planning to inspect the many intricate fail-safe mechanisms in the company of Mr. Knapp, the electronics expert responsible for their construction. And, in an S.A.C. outpost, Col. Grady "mourns" for the day when men, not machines, flew airplanes.
An unexpected emergency arises; the S.A.C. swings into action as Senator Raskob watches. But, once the situation has been clarified and the S.A.C. planes ordered to return, one flight continues on towards the fail-safe point because of an unsuspected mechanical failure. The President and the War Room meeting are informed.
In his White House bomb shelter with his Russian translator, Buck, the President listens in on the Pentagon discussion of the situation. With life hanging in dangerous balance, Groeteschele urges that the entire weight of American might be thrown at the Soviet Union; General Black argues everything must be done to prevent world holocust.
The President agrees with Black; he orders Amercan planes to intercept and shoot down the bombers which, by now, have flown past the fail-safe point and are on their way to Moscow. The President talks on the hot-line to the Russian premier, who is aware of the oncoming planes and must be convinced this is not a sneak attack.
In Omaha, Col. Cascio goes berserk when the President orders General Bogan to supply his Russian opposite number with any information—no matter how top-secret—which will help the Russians destroy the oncoming American planes. At the same time, the President asks General Black, his friend, to prepare for a desperate mission . . .
The plane piloted by Col. Grady pushes remorselessly onward; it will most certainly get through. Not even the direct command of the President, not even the pleadings of Col. Grady's wife, will stop the flier from obeying his orders to continue on his mission, now that he has flown past fail-safe.
The American ambassador in Moscow and the Soviet ambassador to the United States are both on the line, along with the Russian premier in his bomb shelter outside Moscow, when Grady bombs the Russian city. The death of a city is heard on the hot-line.
It was due to mechanical failure, but the Soviet Union and the entire world must still be convinced of this... and, at once!
The President gives General Black his orders .. .
