But Anne so decisively rebuffs the advances of her male neighbors that she is dubbed “the girl most unlikely," although she is attracted to Bret Hendley, whose conquests are legendary. Helen falls in love with Gerald Pryor, another Sans Souci tenant with a reputation; when she learns he really is married, she flees the apartment complex in despair and suffers brutal attack in a deserted waterfront section. Bret, with Anne's willing connivance, wins a bigmoney bet which helps him finish school. They get married first, however, and Mr. Parker throws them the traditional wedding reception before throwing them out of their "for singles only" apartments.
