Praise Indeed! With almost a hundred movie actresses in and out of his arms during 30 years on the screen, James Mason can speak about them with authority—but rarely does. Mason broke his rule, however, for his new leading lady, Lynn Redgrave, with whom he Starseaveunenn.. Theatre in “Georgy Girl,’ Columbia Pictures release also starring Alan Bates. “I don’t have to be a prophet to predict that she’ll soon become one of the most popular stars the screen has ever presented,” he says. In the title role of the ultra-modern love story, Lynn plays a shy, young woman who desperately seeks an affair, and as deliberately erects barriers to prevent it. Mason says that Lynn’s role demanded an actress with a natural flair for high comedy plus the subtlety necessary to shade the character with poignancy. “There are no established stars who could play such a girl,” he says, “And the popular young actresses on the way up couldn’t handle it, either. It took more talent than can be found in former beauy contest winners or models.” Mason believes the secret to Lynn’s powerful dramatic ability is her short but impressive background as a stage actress. “Lynn’s been a member of Britain’s National Theater Company since its inception. Under Larry Olivier’s direction, she’s played leading roles with the most demanding repertory company in the world today. She’s appeared in everything from Shakespeare to Brecht, working with actors who are dedicated to the art of drama,” he says. Charlotte Rampling also stars in “Georgy Girl,” an Everglades production directed by Silvio Narizzano from a screenplay by Margaret Forster and Peter Nichols. Sofa, So Good Five days of red-hot love making on a battered living room sofa had Alan Bates longing for a change — in furniture. The actor’s marathon romancing took place during the filming of “Georgy Girl,” ultra-modern Columbia Pictures comedy at the Theatre. Two girls were involved—but at different times. Lynn Redgrave, who co-stars in the movie with Bates and James Mason, was his partner in three instances and Charlotte Rampling, who also stars in the frank love story, for two additional scenes. All were filmed consecutively. By the fifth day, Bates had developed an intense dislike of the settee used as his playground. “The front seat of a compact car would be more comfortable,” he complained. “I’ve become intimately acquainted with every broken spring in that thing.” Despite his limited, uncomfortable area of operation, the handsome young actor’s versatility with kisses, clutches, pets and hugs delighted director Silvio Narizzano. “Kach embrace looks original,” Narizzano gloated, “Alan is obviously drawing on a fund of previous experiences.” Bates, on the other hand, had his own explanation: “I’m as inventive as the next guy,” Bates groaned, “but there are only so many Ways you can use a sofa—especially one designed by the Marquis de Sade.” eee eee Dance Teacher Working with 24 children from a London dance academy, actress Lynn Redgrave proved so expert in directing their interpretive dancing for scenes in “Georgy Girl,” Columbia Pictures release at thes... . Charlotte wears the exciting new Mary Quant originals designed exclusively for “Georgy Girl.” They include op-art jersey dresses, coats and a severely tailored black corded silk ankle length evening skirt with matching jacket and white chiffon blouse. Miss Quant, probably today’s biggest single influence on young fashion in the world, was born in London in 1934. After art school studies and a couple of years designing for a leading milliner, she opened a dress shop aptly named Bazaar in the Chelsea district of London. The young bohemian Chelsea crowd loved her dashing junior jumpers and shifts, and her fantastic displays of kookie clothes. By 1959 she had her own factory and a second Bazaar shop in London’s elegant Knightsbridge section. Her way-out clothes sold even to staid department stores, which opened special Mary Quant boutiques.
