They include Mackenna, Hadleyburg town marshal who alone knows the way; he must be kept alive at any cost by Colorado, the outlaw chief. There also are Sergeant Tibbs, veteran cavalryman turned renegade; the Indian beauty Hesh-ke angered by Mackenna's interest in the virginal Inga; Sanchez and Hachita, two of Colorado's equally cold-blooded killers; and "the gentlemen from Hadleyburg," the editor, the preacher, the store-keeper, the gambler, two adventuring Englishmen and Old Adams, a prospector who once had seen the Valley of Gold and, now blinded by vengeful Apaches, hopes desperately to return.
