An entertainment feast for the entire family, “Pepe” is crammed with fun, music, color, variety and pageantry, beautifully filmed in CinemaScope and Eastman Color. Heading the awesome parade of talent in “Pepe” is, of course, Cantinflas himself. A superlative artist, Cantinflas’ comedy has a warmth and poigancy about it that stabs at the heart. As “Pepe,” he plays a _ simple-hearted peon ranchhand who, through his devotion to a horse he had raised from a colt, adventures to Hollywood, Las Vegas, Mexico City, Acapulco and Taxco. He has amusing encounters with such guest stars as Maurice Chevalier, Bing Crosby, Michael Callan, Richard Conte, Bobby Darin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jimmy Durante, Zsa Zsa Gabor, The Voice of Judy Garland, Greer Garson, Hedda Hopper, Joey Bishop, Ernie Kovacs, Peter Lawford, Janet Leigh, Jack Lemmon, Jay “Dennis the Menace’”’ North; Kim Novak, Andre Previn, Donna Reed, Debbie Reynolds, Edward G. Robinson, Cesar Romero, Frank Sinatra and many, many more. Cantinflas attaches himself to Dan Dailey, a motion picture director who, to salvage his skidding career, has opportunistically acquired the animal the little comedian loves. Dailey hopes to persuade Robinson, who covets the horse, to back him in a Mexican location film. Cantinflas also meets and falls in love with beautiful Shirley Jones, an aspiring actress; she, in turn, reserves her love for Dan Dailey. The complications are ironed out with entertaining finesse by director-producer Sidney. Dailey sings, dances and acts his way through one of his greatest performances. Shirley Jones is as beautiful and delightful in her own triple-threat stint. And Cantinflas is, of course, superb as “Pepe,” the man who is friendly with the world. Dorothy Kingsley and Claude Binyon collaborated on the “Pepe” screenplay, from the screen story written by Leonard Spigelgass and Sonya Levien. Jacques Gelman served as associate producer of the G.S.—Posa Films International production. (Shirley Jones) A small-town girl with an unglamorous name, Shirley Jones is in revolt against wholesome-asapple-pie roles like the singing heroines of “Oklahoma!” and “Carousel.” “T’m sick of portraying ingenues with sunny dispositions,” she declares determinedly. “It’s not that I’m for sex, per se, even though it’s always darned good boxoffice. But it’s through the sexy roles that I can ultimately play women of adult emotions.” This is the kind of role she plays for director-producer George Sidney in the new Cantinflas picture, “Pepe,” the joyous Columbia release at the ......... Theatre in CinemaScope and Eastman Color She portrays a disillusioned, aspiring actress who finally makes it in the movies and then finds love as well with co-star Dan Dailey. The glamorous role calls for Miss Jones to be sophisticated, and to be garbed—after discarding a beatnik pose and beatnik clothes—in a wardrobe that will make women gasp in envy. The “Pepe” screenplay was written by Dorothy Kingsley and Claude Binyon from a screen story by Leonard Spigelgass and Sonya Levien. Jacques Gelman was associate producer of the G.S.—Posa Films International production for Columbia release. — CREDITS Gowns by EDITH HEAD Art Direction TED HAWORTH Director of Photography JOE MacDONALD, A.S.C.
