Playing a California co-ed on the Oahu Island beach where surfers ride the biggest waves in the world, Shelley’s first screen role is opposite handsome young Fabian, himself something of a musical phenomenon. Neither Shelley nor Fabian sing in “Ride the Wild Surf,” which also stars Tab Hunter, Barbara Eden, Peter Brown, Anthony Hayes, Susan Hart and James Mitchum as Eskimo. One of Hollywood’s brightest young personalities as a result of her work on the Donna Reed TV show, Shelley has been performing on TY and in the theatre since she was four years old. An appearance on a Frank Sinatra spectacular led to dramatic roles in such TV series as “The Loretta Young Show,” “Annie Oakley,” “Playhouse 90” and “Matinee Theatre.” Little more than two years ago, Shelley’s first recording, “Johnny Angel,” was released by Colpix Records and immediately soared to the top ten. She has since had several other hit records. Art and Jo Napoleon penned the screenplay and Don Taylor directed “Ride the Wild Surf,” a Jana production. At Los Angeles University High School, Mitchum excelled in football, track, swimming and basketball. He also did all right as an actor, when he started with the Hollywood Professional School at 16 and then joined the Barter Theatre in Virginia because he believed the best way to learn to act was to act. Son of Robert Mitchum, whom he closely resembles, James Mitchum has appeared in such films as “The Beat Generation,” “The Last Time I Saw Archie,” “Thunder Road” and Carl Foreman’s “The Victors.” “Ride the Wild Surf” is a Columbia Pictures release. eee eer eee Be (Mat 1A; Still No. P92) Recording stars Fabian and Shelley Fabares play romantic roles in Columbia Pictures' "Ride the Wild Surf,"' new Jana production in color. A native New Yorker, he attended high school in Spokane, Washington, and UCLA after his discharge from military service. It was while serving with the 2nd Infantry Division in Alaska during 1954-56 that he made his first serious effort toward acting. He had tried his fledgling wings in high school dramatics but, in the Army, he went into full flight by appearing in 23 shows. His other acting experience before tackling Hollywood was obtained at the Spokane Civic Theatre. In Hollywood he continued his little theatre efforts, at the Horseshoe Theatre and the Gallery Theatre. His first feature motion picture was “Darby’s Rangers.” He then starred as the deputy sheriff for four years in the “Lawman” TV series. They meet surfers from all over the world, and they meet blonde Brie Matthews, sensuous Lily Kalua and vivacious Augie Poole. A California co-ed, Brie helps Jody realize he can be more than just a surf bum if he wants to be. The daughter of a New England woman who had been deserted by her husband, a Hawaiian surfer, Lily’s growing love for Steamer is shaded by the knowledge that her mother despises surfers. Impulsive and fun-loving, Augie persuades Chase, stuffy scion of a banking family, that life is meant to be enjoyed. Almost killed while waiting for the “big ones,” Jody determines to continue despite his growing fears. Steamer, an automobile mechanic who discovers manhood working on the Kilua ranch, proposes to and is accepted by Lily but his insistence on riding the big waves turns her mother against him. Despite Augie’s pleas, Chase risks his life to make a Hawaiian legend come true; he “brings in the big waves” with a dangerous 80 foot dive into a rocky pool. The 40-foot waves come in, and Jody, Steamer and Chase ride them in competition against the world’s best surfers, as the girls and others watch from the beach. Chase almost drowns; Jody risks his own life to rescue him. Steamer’s surfboard breaks; he is out of it, but Lily’s mother is prepared to forgive him—and to forgive Lily’s father. Still in the competition, Jody rides the wild surf against the taciturn Eskimo, the sole other survivor, whose bulldog tenacity helped him win the championship the year before. Their bodies are covered with coral welts and bruises, and Eskimo finally offers to compromise; they will ride their last wave together. Jody refuses, and Eskimo quits. Exhausted but triumphant, Jody rides the 40-foot wave in alone ... to the waiting Brie.
