Robinson’s most outstanding performances, “The Whole Town’s Talking” is a robust, exciting and _ hilarious comedy-drama that promises to start the whole town talking about it all over again.
“The Whole Town’s Talking” casts Robinson in a dual role, offering him unusual comic and dramatic opportunities as an inoffensive, frightened little clerk who is mistaken for the country’s most sought-after gangster, he is given a “passport” by the authorities to identify himself at all times. However, his gangster counterpart, whom Robinson also portrays, frightens the clerk into hiding nights while he uses the “passport” to carry on his criminal activities. Jones, the clerk, finally develops a fair amount of courage when his girl friend, played by the lovely Jean Arthur, is kidnapped

Robinson is seen in the dual roles of a meek little clerk, and an escaped criminal. Jean Arthur is featured opposite Robinson as a flip young stenographer, ardently admired by the clerk from afar for years. Clerk and criminal exchange identities, to the confusion of the police, until the former finds courage enough to oppose and finally capture his brutal counterpart.

Arthur Jones (Edward G. Robinson), a meek clerk, is the physical counterpart of ‘Killer’? Mannion (Edward G. Robinson), nation’s No. One public enemy. To prevent police from molesting the innocent Jones, the authorities arm him with a document attesting his identity. However, Mannion cows Jones into hiding at night while he goes about his criminal affairs, using the “‘passport” as a feint. When Jones’ girl friend, “Bill” (Jean Arthur), is kidnapped by the gangster, Jones finds courage enough to capture Mannion and to propose to “Bill.”
