A Columbia Picture. STORY (Not for Publication) Captain John McReady (Willard Parker), of Gloucester, is blackballed by the shipowners when he loses a ship on the reefs at Norman’s Woe! He joins company in 1830 with George Lockhart (Edgar Buchanan) in the salvaging business, not knowing that Lockhart deliberately wrecks ships by placing lanterns along false channels. Efforts of Deborah (Patricia White), McReady’s beloved, to have a lighthouse built on the treacherous rocks fail when her pleadings are opposed by Lockhart’s henchmen. In the meantime, Lockhart orders his men to wreck the schooner “Hesperus.” McReady hears the alarm and races to the shore where he makes a very successful salvaging haul. The following day, as the loot is being sold at auction, Deborah tells McReady she will never marry him until he leaves the dirty salvage business. The Captain receives a further shock when he learns that his brother and niece have both perished in the wreck. Overcome by grief, he goes down to the reef, where he finds a lantern, proving that the wreck was no accident. When he confronts Lockhart with this news, the latter arranges with his political friends to have McReady imprisoned. The daring seaman escapes, however, and while trying to reach the govnernor, secrets himself aboard a mail coach, where he finds Deborah. When McReady is recaptured, the girl goes on to enlighten the governor about the trouble at Norman’s Woe. McReady is freed and traps Lockhart by ringing the “wreck” bell without cause, and then ambushing the wreckers as they hurry to hide their lanterns. In a bruising fight, Lockhart is beaten and captured.
