Theatre. Four-star General Jacob Devers, now retired, whose fighting record is quite formidable, enthusiastically endorsed the picture: “‘Yesterday’s Enemy’ reminded me of many grim combat experiences of the responsibility of command. Also, it stimulated my thinking on the controversial questions which it raises. This is a powerful picture, and it is well presented.” Chief Signal Officer of the Army Major General R. T. Nelson remarked: “The Americans think atrocities were committed only by Japanese and Germans. I expect most Americans viewing ‘Yesterday’s Enemy’ will conclude that nothing like that could happen in the American Army. I doubt if very many people will ever know how many similar instances did occur among U. S. troops.” The reactions of military men of other nations, and especially veterans who saw action in the war, are also highly favorable. English Major-General H. L. Davies, C.B., CBE., O.BE., D.S.O., M.C., who served as brigadier General Staff in the Burma campaign said: “I have never been so impressed and gripped by a film. The character portrayal is magnificent and there is a realism and authenticity about the atmosphere and background The following publicity story can be used “as or it can be supplemented with quotes from local veterans, Army officers, etc. Use these and local quotes, too, in special ads, publicity and bulletin board announcements aimed at veterans, parents, church groups and similar organizations. which, to one who fought through this horrible campaign, is quite frightening .. . Taking the film as a whole, this was the war in the jungle and these were the men on both sides who fought it out to the death.” Major-General A. H. J. Snelling, C.B., C.B.E., chairman of ithe Burma Star Association, commented: “The few who served and survived the early days in the Arakan will find ‘Yesterday’s Enemy’ an intensely realistic reminder of their grim experiences.” Members of the ChinaBurma-India Veterans Association were particularly impressed: “ ‘Yesterday’s Enemy’ is brutally frank and realistic,” according to Harold Kretchmar, national commander of the organization. “To the general public, it will be shocking but realistic and awakening. Few people other than the combat infantry men have such an opportunity to see war in its true and unadulterated light.” Haldor Reinholt, junior national vice-commander of the C.B.I.V.A. said: “‘Yesterday’s Enemy’ is so accurate a presentation of jungle warfare that it could and should be used as an Army training film.” Following the seven-theatre world premiere of the picture in Tokyo, Japan, former Japanese military figures also commented favorably. For example, Eichi Tsuchiva, ex-lieutenant Burma Expeditionary Forces: “The actuality of the battlefields, the conflict between military discipline and humanitarianism, the cruelty of war are all well expressed . . . The characters are so well played that I, at any rate, had the feeling that I was back in actual battle in the Burma jungle.” DRIVE-IN'’S BOB CONSIDINE, noted correspondent, says: “If they ever make a more meaningful war picture, they’ll have to fire live ammo from the screen!” .
