General Advance British press criticism of “initiative” tests devised for the British soldier were the happy origin of the Charles H. Schneer production, “You Must Be Joking!” now at the ...... Theatre. Story of such a test, a 48-hour scavenger hunt participated in by a group of oddly-assorted servicemen, the new Columbia Pictures release reportedly is one of the zaniest and most hilarious comedies to reach the screen. Stars, and their roles in the film, include: the inimitable Terry-Thomas as the British Army psychological officer, himself clearly in need of psychiatric help, who devises a “test” which inevitably leads to the disruption of London, the British Army and various other aspects of British life and, finally, to the arrest of both Terry-Thomas and his complacent commanding officer, Wilfrid Hyde-White. Taking the test are Michael Callan, the exuberant incompetent train robber but determined suitor of “Cat Ballou,” appearing as an American air force lieutenant with an interest in girls and horse racing; Lionel Jeffries, as a kilted disciplinarian of a sergeant from a Highland regiment; Denholm Elliott, who was the victim in “Nothing But the Best,” as a gentleman-officer who promptly moves into a luxury hotel and throws a two-day binge, while his friends and the hotel staff collect the trophies required by Terry-Thomas; and Bernard Cribbins, as a complete incompetent who never even gets started in the test. Tracy Reed The long-legged beauty who played George C. Scott’s “secretary” in the delightful “Dr. Strangelove,” currently may be seen as girl friend of another military man in Charles H. Schneer’s “You Must Be JokNg Oi Ro a a i Theatre. She is Tracy Reed and in the new Columbia Pictures comedy she helps British gentlemanofficer Denholm Elliott take an “initiative” test which disrupts London and the British Army. The girl here is Patricia Viterbo, and all Callan wants is a lock of her hair. A OOOO OOOO OOOOH ATO MA TO TTU TANNA TT Terry-Thomas The man with the dental gap and the tea-strainer mustache, Terry-Thomas moved from the joyous skulduggery of “The Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines” to the modern-day hilarity to be found in military “initiative” tests. The film is Charles H. Schneer’s production, “You Must Be Joking!” at the neste ets Theatre, and TerryThomas plays a British Army major who devises such a test to find the ideal soldier; in 48 hours, his candidates wreck much of London and the British Army and both he and his commanding officer find themselves in jail. The new comedy stars Michael Callan, Lionel Jeffries, Denholm Elliott, Wilfrid Hyde-White and Bernard Cribbins, with TerryThomas as guest star. There are special appearances by James Robertson Justice and Leslie Phillips. The Columbia Pictures release, an Ameran film, introduces Gabriella Licudi and Patricia Viterbo. Alan Hackney penned the screenplay. Lionel Jeffries One of the _ international screen’s most versatile character actors, Lionel Jeffries plays one of five servicemen taking part in a rough-and-tumble comedy, Charles H. Schneer’s “You Must Be Joking!,” at the ...... Theatre. In the Columbia Pictures release, Jeffries appears as the staff sergeant of a Highland regiment, a rigid disciplinarian in kilts who is not at all averse to unabashed chicanery. Jeffries accepted star billing only four years ago. It is correct to say “accepted,” and not “was given” because many times before he had refused to have his name above a film title. “I didn’t think I was ready to move up and I’m sure that if I had been starred earlier I should have stunted my career,’ he says. “Once you’re up there, you can’t accept anything less than a major role.” “You Must Be Joking” also stars Michael Callan, Denholm Elliott, Wilfrid Hyde-White and Bernard Cribbins, with TerryThomas as guest star, There are special appearances by Jomes Robertson Justice and Leslie Phillips and the Ameran film introduces Gabriella Licudi and Patricia Viterbo. Alan Hackney penned the screenplay from a story he had written with Michael Winner, who directed the Charles H. Schneer production. dames Robertson Justice James Robertson Justice, one of several distinguished stars in the Charles H. Schneer production, “You Must Be Joking!” the Columbia Pictures comedy at the Pee Pe Theatre, cannot simply be called an actor; there are too many sides to him, too many interests and occupations. Justice is an Honorary Doctor of Law, rector of Edinburgh University, scientist, naturalist, falconer and ornithologist who can converse in Italian, Dutch, French, German and Gaelic as well as English. And as befits such an obviously versatile and physically-immense man, he has been a school teacher, gold miner, foreign correspondent, lumberjack, photographer, coalbarge mate, racing driver, icerink manager, policeman and truck driver. He also was an officer in the Royal Navy. “It is Page 6 only occasionally that I’m wholly an actor,” he says. When producer Schneer came to cast “You Must Be Joking!” the large, portly and bearded James Robertson Justice was one of the first he chose and Justice agreed to fly to London from his Scottish home to portray an irascible librarian who becomes involved in an Army “initiative” test. The new comedy stars Michael Callan, Lionel Jeffries, Denholm Elliott, Wilfrid Hyde-White and Bernard Cribbins, with TerryThomas as guest star. Leslie Phillips also makes a special appearance and the Ameran film introduces Gabriella Licudi and Patricia Viterbo. Alan Hackney penned the screenplay from a story he had written with Michael Winner, director of the Charles H. Schneer production. Denholm Elliott Denholm Elliott, co-starred in the Charles H. Schneer production, “You Must Be Joking!” the Columbia Pictures comedy at the Theatre, is one of the growing band of commuteractors who are as well known on Broadway as in London’s West End, or in Hollywood. Two years ago, he was in Africa filming “Station Six Sahara.” Then he returned to London for a play; moved on to Broadway with “Write Me A Murder;” returned to London for the film “Nothing But The Best;” and then trekked to Hollywood for “King Rat.” Elliott returned to London for “You Must Be Joking!” the comedy which related the wooly adventures of five servicemen involved in an Army “Initiative” test. Elliott is one of the five, a gentleman-officer and gourmet who promptly settles himself into a plush hotel, surrounds himself with beautiful girls, and demands every delicate dish the best chefs can produce. The “test” itself is taken by the reluctant hotel staff while Elliott eats himself into a case of food poisoning. “You Must Be Joking!” also stars Michael Callan, Lionel Jeffries, Wilfrid Hyde-White and Bernard Cribbins, with TerryThomas as guest star. There are special appearances by James Robertson Justice and _ Leslie Phillips and the Columbia Pictures release, an Ameran film, introduces Gabriella Licudi and Patricia Viterbo. Alan Hackney penned the screenplay from a story he had written with Michael Winner, the film’s director. Historic Locations Of the 84 locations chosen for producer Charles H. Schneer’s “You Must Be Joking,” the Columbia Pictures comedy at the Ag Ro Theatre, none was more impressive than Hatfeld House, one of the great historic houses of England. The unit filmed in the famous maze there and the beautiful wooded grounds. Hunt scenes were actually filmed only a few yards from the oak tree where, tradition has it, the first Princess Elizabeth was sitting when messengers arrived from London to announce that she was Queen of England. The maze, a breath-takingly beautiful but complicated series of hedges where important comedy scenes were shot, was laid out more than 120 years ago. “You Must Be Joking!” stars Michael Callan, Lionel Jeffries, Denholm Elliott, Wilfrid HydeWhite and Bernard Cribbins, with Terry-Thomas as guest star. There are special appearances of James Robertson Justice and Leslie Phillips and the American film introduces Gabriella Licudi and Patricia Viterbo. eseeceeveee Michael Callan Michael Callan, who was the incompetent young cattle-rustler, gunman and train robber, but oh-so-eager suitor, in “Cat Ballou,” plays a U. S. Air Force lieutenant trying to prove he is a quick-thinking, competent soldier in “You Must Be Joking,” Charles H. Schneer comedy at eee Theatre. Loose in London on an “initiative” test which is something of a scavenger hunt, Callan not only manages to wreck almost everything and everybody he meets, but he also succeeds in collecting all the necessary trophies. These include a lock of hair from the head of a popular television star, played by lovely Patricia Viterbo. Callan not only gets the hair and he also gets the girl. Callan was signed by Columbia after his success as a danceractor in the Broadway production of “West Side Story.” Carl Foreman cast him in a principal role in “The Victors” and he has starred in such other films as “The Interns,” “The New Interns” and “Cat Ballou.” Born in Philadelphia, Callan started singing when he was 11, took dancing lessons at 13 and, between lessons and_ school, helped out in his father’s cafe. He worked in Philadelphia night clubs as a singer and dancer, then went to New York, where he appeared in the musical, “The Boy Friend.” “You Must Be Joking!” also stars Lionel Jeffries, Denholm Elliott, Wilfrid Hyde-White and Bernard Cribbins, with TerryThomas as guest star. There are special appearances of James Robertson Justice and Leslie Phillips. The Columbia Pictures release, an Ameran film, introduces Gabriella Licudi and Patricia Viterbo. Alan Hackney penned the screenplay from a story he had written with Michael Winner, who directed the Charles H. Schneer production. The Lutine Bell The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is world-famous as a symbol of America; the Lutine Bell in London is a symbol of the British way of life. For this reason, it is among the trophies which must be collected by a group of servicemen in an “initiative” test, in the comedy course of “You Must Be Joking!”, the Charles H. Schneer production for Columbia Pictures release at the 4pecse 2 Theatre. The Lutine Bell is from a ship, the Lutine, which sank more than 100 years ago. It is a part of the history of Lloyd’s of London, the insurance firm, and is ceremoniously rung whenever a ship insured by Lloyd’s is lost at sea. In the new comedy, the Lutine Bell is successfully stolen by Michael Callan, as an American lieutenant taking the “test.” Tee {Mat IB; Still No. 100) Michael Callan, as an American air force lieutenant, is helped in an Army “initiative” test by lovely Gabriella Licudi, in the Charles H. Schneer production, "You Must Be Joking!" The Columbia Pictures comedy also stars Lionel Jeffries, Denholm Elliot, Wilfrid Hyde-White and Bernard Cribbins and guest-stars Terry-Thomas. Teen Gabriella Licudi A “very correct” English girl who helps an American air force lieutenant in London with both an “initiative” test and a sparkling blonde French songstress, is played in “You Must Be Joking!” by the very un-Britishnamed Gabriella Licudi. Miss Licudi, currently to be seen in the Charles H. Schneer comedy at the Theatre, is of Greek-Spanish descent; she was born in Casablanca. Gabriella speaks fluent Spanish, French, Italian and, of course, English. Gabriella’s father was a British naval engineer whose assignments took him to Gibraltar and North Africa. Because he was constantly on the move, Gabriella was educated in convents in England, France and Spain. She has made England her home only since she was fifteen. “You Must Be Joking!” stars Michael Callan, Lionel Jeffries, Denholm Elliott, Wilfrid HydeWhite and Bernard Cribbins, with Terry-Thomas as_ guest star. Ad Lib ‘Dancer’ Dancer Michael Callan turned complete “amateur” in the course of the new Charles H. Schneer production, “You Must Be Joking!”’, at the Theatre. As an American air force lieutenant taking part in an “initiative” test, Callan must get near enough to lovely French singer Patricia Viterbo to clip a lock of her hair.
