Mineo said he could understand Walsh’s decision. In fact he has used drum solos to end parties in his own house.
“After a few ruffles everybody seems to find urgent business somewhere else,” Mineo says. “It’s a trick I learned from Perry Como.”

Carere (a bookish friend of Mineo’s who comes to visit him and is drawn to Coe), Barbara Eden (a WAC who takes up with Crosby after his dates, the entire Copa chorus line stands him up) and Terry Moore (an old friend of Coe’s who goes for Mineo). At the same time, Backus hears a tape recording of a song the three did and asks that they be allowed to perform on a special TV spectacular he is going to do. The Army agrees, but Coe comes down with laryngitis and, while he is confined to the infirmary, is accidentally married to the visiting Secretary of the Army, Jessie Royce Landis, who has actually agreed to marry a dying Dutchman so that his child may be allowed to remain in America and not sent back to Holland as an orphan (her mother killed and her father having been in an accident near the camp). Somehow, she is married to the silently protesting Coe.
Hilarious Mixup
When Coe regains his voice, he tells the Army authorities what has happened, and he is committed for mental treatment. The resulting mixup makes for one of the zaniest comedies ever to come out of Hollywood, and before the mixup is straightened out and the three boys are able to sing their song over a national TV hookup and win the girls, some of the funniest scenes ever filmed happen.
In addition to the starring cast, “A Private’s Affair’ features a sparkling supporting cast: Robert Burton, Alan Hewitt, Robert Denver and Tige Andrews. Also, Robert Montgomery, Jr., son of the famous film-TV star, makes an appearance as a member of the basic training platoon into which the boys are thrown.
