His wife, Janet (DORIS DAY), surprises him by renting a rambling house in the country, instead of the apartment he wanted in the vicinity of his office. Mike’s work soon causes him to spend considerable time in London, and Janet begins to suspect something fishy between him and his secretary, Claire (MAURA McGIVENEY). Janet’s landlady, Vanessa (HERMIONE BADDELEY) advises Janet to make Mike jealous by prentending an interest in someone else. Janet decides that the someone else will be Paul Bellari (SERGIO FANTONI), a suave antique dealer. Meanwhile, Mike has learned that Baird Woolens has done poorly in Europe because of one Willie Langsdorf (LEON ASKIN), the key European woolens buyer who is something of a bon vivant, and has been unimpressed by Mike’s stuffy predecessors. When Mike is forced to go to Scotland on business, Janet invites Bellari to their home to help decorate it. In the course of this activity, Bellari suggests that they fly to Paris for a special table that he thinks would be perfect for the dining room. Janet goes to Paris with Bellari, not knowing that Mike will return from Scotland early, and will follow her. In Paris, Janet gets drunk, has a wild time, and finally passes out in Bellari’s antique shop. Mike arrives bright and early in the morning, delivers a devastating punch to Bellari’s jaw, announces his divorce plans, and leaves for a meeting of woolens manufacturers. Janet follows him to the hotel and bumps into, of all people, Willie Langsdorf, who is immediately charmed by her. He invites her to a party that night, which is attended by Mike. There, amid music, champagne and chaos, Janet and Mike fall in love all over again. Their antics so impress Willie Langsdorf, that he decides to become a customer of Baird Woolens.
