20th century-fox m= exhibitors campaign manual Synopsis (Not For Publication) Art student Susie Higgins (PAMELA TIFFIN) arrives in Madrid to join her college classmate, Maggie Williams (CAROL LYNLEY), secretary in an American news agency. Susie moves in with Maggie and her roommate, Fran Hobson (ANN-MARGRET), a singer-dancer. : The girls breakfast together, and in the course of conversation, the subject of men is raised. Fran says that rich Spaniards marry in their own class, and the poor ones are too proud to marry rich American girls. During this discussion it is clear that Fran is a bit disillusioned with love, that Maggie’s romantic concepts are having a struggle with reality, and that Susie’s emotions are stirring but untried. Maggie goes to her office where she meets Pete Stenelle (GARDNER McKAY), a news correspondent with a hangover and scme unkind words for their boss, Paul Barten (BRIAN KEITH), who soon appears with word that a party must be arranged for an important publisher. Barten accepts Maggie’s suggestion that Fran entertain at the party. When Fran hears the news, she is so happy and excited that she dashes cut of her apartment to the street and on the way to her destination, she is struck down by a handsome young Spaniard on a motor scooter. He is Doctor Andres Briones (ANDRE LAWRENCE) and Fran falls in love with him on the spct. She is not hurt and he drives away just as Fran was trying to prolong the encounter. Meanwhile Susie visits Madrid’s famed Prado Museum and there meets a wealthy young nobleman, Emile Lacayo (TONY FANCIOSA). Emile and Susie tour the museum together, as Emile tries to get a romance started. He is very aggressive and this makes Susie wary of him. At the Barton party, Maggie confides to Susie that she is in love with Paul Barton, although he is accompanied by his wife, Jane, (GENE TIERNEY). Emilio Lacayo arrives, and when Susie says that she has met him, Fran describes his methods of seduction so minutely that it can only be concluded that she has experienced them firsthand. Fran does her number and Maggie dances with Barton, who implies that he has fallen in love with her. This disturbs Maggie, and she asks Pete Stenelle to take her home. In his car, Pete says that Barton is trying to short-circuit his career and states that he knows of the romance between her and Barton. He also makes an enigmatic profession of affection for Maggie. Soon afterwards, Fran meets Andres and a romance blossoms between them. They go cn a picnic together and he declares his love to her. Then they have a two-day idyll in Estepena. After this he sends her away, saying that he can’t afford a wife, and his honor will not permit him to continue their relationship. Emilio continues his pursuit of Susie without success. Finally he agrees to take her home to meet his mother. On the appointed day, he does not arrive so Susie decides to take the iniative and visits Senora Lacalo (ISOBAL ELSOM) all alone. When Susie arrives at the Lacayo estate, Senora Lacayo knows of no such appcintment, but is sympathetic towards Susie. She says that her son has no sense of honor, and is just taking advantage of her. Emilio arrives to hear his mother speaking disparagingly of him, but this is of little comfort to Susie. Susie returns home to find an equally dejected Fran. Both decide to return to America, and inform Maggie cf their plans. Meanwhile, Paul Stenelle is dejected to learn that Maggie has accepted a date with Barton. Barton takes Maggie to a luxurious party, but soon learns that most of the guests are erring wives and husbands, mistresses and gigilos. Maggie is saddened further when Barton prepeses that they have a clandestine affair. Maggie retires to the powder room where she is joined by Jane Barton. Just as Jane is berating Maggie for trying to steal her husband, Pete arrives and rescues Maggie. Maggie now decides to return to America with her friends. Barton arranges a farewell party for the girls and for himself, because he is being transferred back to America and Pete will replace him in Madrid. At the party, Pete tenderly asks Maggie to stay with him in Madrid and help him with his new job. Then Emilio arrives, apologizes to Susie, and declares his deep affection for her. Andre arrives too, and soon he effects a reconciliation with Fran. The three couples leave the party, and as they go their separate ways, Fran is singing ‘’Next Time.” EMI eres rare eho sak, oh poe ee eh a ce Ann-Margret MINI ots ir os ht ce be Ay he eee eat Tony Franciosa _ | pei ie a RES a SNA Ree ean Se ea ae ae Ba JERE Carol Lynley oa CURB Pe RRR Fi eA is AE eee Semana Gardner McKay RI ee ee ec eae,» Cee ie ok AU ee Pamela Tiffin Andres EGE SE SSSR REET GoM ae ERO ete Fete LT RE Ah ce a Ci Andre Lawrence MINERS et es. virile eu. toll, cs ike cas ee Gene Tierney 2 RRR aie end a ie Ot eam ese af Cae a Vito Scotti ats SCS ae Seip Sey eae: petit et ME aia ee eer aoe ig Isobel Elsom WOSQusr ee rtrcre ees nah es Ane ome aici A Vee eat et Maurice Marsac American Girl ..........
