In the summer of 1911, Lucretia Rogers (DEBBIE REYNOLDS), a young widow, leaves her two children in New York with her frosty mother-in-law, Mrs. Rogers (ISOBEL ELSOM), and takes the train to Charleyville, Arizona, where she hopes to get the storekeeper job promised to her late husband. Lu promises the children that she will send for them soon.
She arrives in Charleyville to find that her prospective employer has just been killed by bandits. This leaves Lu without funds, friends, or job and presumed by the townsfolk to be a member of “The Little Rascals,“ a girlie troup due in town. When corrupt Sheriff Yoss( KEN SCOTT) makes a pass at her, she slugs him with her umbrella. She also turns down a job offer as a barmaid from gambler-saloon owner Dan Jones (STEVE FORREST). Dan’s partner Rena (JULIET PROWSE), a dancehall girl, is supicious of his feelings toward Lu.
Lady Rancher Aggie Gates (THELMA RITTER) gives Lu a job as a farm hand. Lu soon learns that ranching is not easy, but she sticks to her work because she needs the money to send for her children. Aggie admires her determination and the two become good friends.

In town, conflict develops between Lu and Sheriff Yoss when she complains about his not solvivng the murder of the storekeeper. Angered by his cruel treatment of a Mexican family, she decides to start a petition to remove Yoss from office. When he hears of this, he threatens her. Lu will not stand for this and wallops him with her umbrella again. When Yoss’ deputies appear, Dan, Collins and Rena pitch in and quickly put an end to the ruckus that follows.
Using the ruse that there is a hidden gold mine in the mountains, Dan convinces Lu to go prospecting with him. When Collins comes looking for her, Aggie tells him where she has gone and he jumps on his horse yelling “’there’s no gold in them thar hills!”
While panning for gold, Lu falls into a stream. Dan fishes her out and kisses her. At first she submits, but then forces herself to reveal that she is a mother. Dan apologizes for his behavior. Collins rides up and knocks Dan unconscious. He tells Lu that she has been fooled, but she won’t believe him. When Dan comes to,

he admits he planted nuggets in the stream. Lu socks him and runs
off crying. She doesn’t want to see either of them again.
Arizona has just gained its statehood and a new Sheriff is demanded by the people. Lu yolunteers to run against Yoss in an election. Receiving the support of the women, who have been granted the right to vote, Lu rallies. Her first duties as Arizona’s lady Sheriff is to tell Yoss that he has until sundown to leave town. She also jails Dan for illegal gambling. Behind bars he expresses his love for her.
Yoss’ men kidnap Lu and take her to his hide-out, a saloon across the border in Mexico. Dan organizes a posse. Disguising himself as one of the bandits, Dan gains the upper hand while the outlaws watch Rena, dressed as a Mexican seniorita, do a fiery dance. Once Lu is safe, Dan quickly leaves.
With the reward money for capturing the bandits, Lu sends for her two children. Waiting at the station for their arrival, she notices Dan with his lugggage. She reproaches him for deserting her. He answers that he couldn’t propose to a law officer. Lu quickly removes her badge, tosses it away and melts into Dan’s arms.
Rena and Collins have been watching. Collins picks up the discarded badge and puts it on. Rena takes his arm and willingly accepts his proposal of becoming the Sheriff's bride.
