He discovers that most of the prisoners are British infantry captured at Tobruk, and their senior officer is Major Eric Fincham (TREVOR HOWARD). Fincham and his men are boiling over with bitterness and frustration at their long imprisonment, but Ryan resigns himself to being a prisoner. He knows that the Allies will liberate him soon, and he decides to cooperate with the camp’s administrative officer, Captain Oriani (SERGIO FANTONI). Ryan’s cooperation with his captors earns him the name of “Von Ryan” from the other prisoners, and unwittingly he begins to make trouble for them. When Italy surrenders, Oriani is ordered by the Germans to load the prisoners on a freight train bound for Austria. When Ryan learns of this plan, he decides the time has come to take action. As the train speeds northward with its cargo of prisoners, Ryan formulates a plan to capture the train and head for the Swiss border. With the aid of Fincham and his men, the guards are over-powered, and the train’s commander, Major Von Klement (WOLFGANG PREISS) is captured along with his Italian mistress Gabriella (RAFFAELLA CARRA). Now “Von Ryan’s Express”’ must bluff and fight its way through four hundred miles of Nazi-controlled Italy. Ryan and Fincham masquerade as German officers, and they soon discover that 10 minutes behind them on the tracks is a German troop train. After numerous thrilling adventures and incidents, “Von Ryan’s Express’’ finally reaches the Swiss Border—only to find a German ambush waiting for them. With German fighter planes strafing them from the air, and German soldiers attacking on the ground, Ryan, Fincham and the POW’s stage their last desperate battle for freedom.
