So she told the boss off and headed for Hollywood where in no time flat she got roles in TV, culminating as the famous “Laya’”’ opposite Bob Crosby in the “I Spy” series. Quincy Davis (CALVIN LOCKHART) former black basketball star, is to become vice-principal of the latter. There is tension at the newly segregated black school from the start, with polarization forming around Doug Falk (JEFF BRIDGES) a white athlete, and J. T. Watson (JAMES WATSON) the accepted black leader. White Leaky (ROB REINER) a racist, is angry and resentful. Pretty Lorraine Nash (JANET MacLACHLAN) a popular teacher, is discouraged and about to quit. Lerone Johnson (DEWAYNE JESSE) a black student, doesn't want to learn to read. After all, it's "whitey's word'’ and who needs it? But Quincy introduces him to literature via sexy paperbacks and the boy becomes an avid reader. The point is not lost on the rest of the faculty. Things take a bad turn when Falk, trying out for the basketball team, is brutally beaten by his black team mates. They become worse when Leaky picks a fight with Johnson and the frantic principal, unable to cope with the situation, expels both. This brings on an immediate confrontation. Watson takes possession of the school entrance and refuses to allow anybody to enter. The principal sends for the police. Trouble seems imminent when Quincy takes charge of the situation and promises there will be no police intervention, and this over the principal's head. Both Leaky and Johnson will be given just hearings, Ee promises. Watson is willing to see. Falk, still smarting from his hurts, is not. Watson is finally won over and calls off the confrontation. But it takes some doing to get Falk to come in. He does, however, when Quincy points out that he has had a taste of what it means to be a black in a white world and that this business of white and black worlds had better stop if, indeed, there is to be any world at all. Lorraine, realizing this too, remains at the post in the school.
