SYNOPSIS
Young Sandy Ricks (LUKE HALPIN) learns that Flipper, his pet dolphin, is to be taken from him, and decides to run away to a remote island where they will never be found.
His father, Porter Ricks (BRIAN KELLY), is away at Park Ranger school when Sandy takes a skiff, supplies and Flipper and heads out to sea. Soon exhausted from hunger, thirst and exposure, Sandy collapses. However, Flipper, swimming alongside, manages to get the bow line loop around his bottle nose and tows the skiff to an isolated island where Sandy revives.
Sandy’s father, upon receiving news that his boy is missing, begins a thorough boat search of the Florida keys.
However, young Sandy is delighted by his island hideaway, especially when Flipper guides him to an underwater air-fed cave where they can avoid a search party if necessary.
Meanwhile three escaped convicts, Barney, Ish and Gill (WILLIAM COOLEY, COURTENEY BROWN AND LLOYD BATISTA) are hiding on a nearby island. Spotting an approaching luxury yacht, they take to.a raft and pretend to be unconscious castaways. When the motor sailer stops, the convicts take command.
They keep Sir Halsey Hopewell (TOM HELMORE) on board, but force his wife, Julia (HELEN CHERRY), and two daughters, Gwen (FRANCESCA ANNIS) and Penny (PAMELA FRANKLIN), to leave for Sandy’s island in a small boat. The rowboat capsizes in the surf and Flipper saves Penny from drowning.
The Hopewell family is completely inexperienced in wilderness survival, and a sympathetic Sandy decides to give them help. Remaining in his hiding place, Sandy has Flipper throw such things as raw fish, matches, knives and a flashlight up on the beach. Although they don’t know how the objects got there, the Hopewells accept the help eagerly.
Later Sandy befriends Penny, swears her to secrecy, and teaches her how to start a fire, collect coconuts and otherwise survive on the island.
In a few days the convicts return in the cruiser. They have discovered that Sir Halsey is a millionaire industrialist and demand that he help obtain full freedom for them or they will kill the entire Hopewell family.
Sandy and Flipper, working as a team, come to the Hopewells’ rescue. Battling the convicts above the water and below, the two capture Ish and Barney and make them prisoners in the underwater cave. In an underwater fight, Gill plunges a knife into Flipper before Sandy is able to tie the convict to an anchor chain.
Sandy frees the Hopewell family, but is overcome with grief at the possibility Flipper may die. Sir Halsey radios for help and the Coast Guard flies the injured Flipper to Miami Seaquarium.
There Sandy is reunited with his father while three experienced doctors perform an operation on the dolphin. If they can just get Flipper to swim again, he will be all right.
Porter Ricks tells his boy that he has won a position as Ranger for the Coral Park Marine Reserve, and that if Flipper lives, they will all make the park their new home.
The Seaquarium doctors complete their operation and tenderly place Flipper back in the water. For a tense moment the animal lies motionless on the bottom.
Then with joy, Sandy watches Flipper’s fins and tail fluke come to life. As Flipper swims gaily around his pool, Sandy is elated to know that there will be new adventures still ahead for a boy and his dolphin.
