LOVELY SHELLEY FABARES LUCKY IN HER LEADING MEN From Elvis Presley in “Girl Happy” to the new swinging MGM musical romp, “Hold On!,” starring the famed British singing group, Herman’s Hermits. That’s the gamut made by Shelley Fabares—and what young actress could ask for anything more? But then, good things have come Shelley’s way through most of her young life. As a very cute little girl, she appeared regularly on the “Annie Oakley” series and went on to star as Donna Reed’s TV daughter for five years. When this assignment ended she was no longer a cute child, but an extraordinarily beautiful young woman. Not all child actresses are able to make this fortunate transition. “T’ve been lucky,” says the girl with the pool blue eyes, “I always wanted to be an actress. Being born in Santa Monica, California, was a break. It’s near all the studios. On top of that, I was lucky enough to have Broadway star Nanette Fabray as an aunt and she has been wonderful in guiding my acting career.” Almost two years ago, Shelley became Mrs. Lou Adler, wife of the successful young music publisher, She lists the date, June 2nd, as the highlight of her happy life. “He’s my favorite leading man,” she declares, and adds, “but if I am to be envied because of my leading men it’s not because they are idols. The joy of it is that they are such likeable people. “Elvis-is the nicest guy you'll ever meet. And I’ve never had so much fun in my life as I did while we were filming ‘Hold On!’ It wasn’t work at_all. Herman’s Hermits are so infectious that it was more like a carefree vacation.” Good fortune continues to smile on Shelley Fabares, She has received word that she will again be Elvis’ girl friend in his new MGM romantic comedy, titled ‘‘Spinout.” Shelley considers it to be an appropriate title as far as she herself is con cerned, ; “Tt’s the story of my life,” she laughs. “Tt’s been one real spin!” PANDEMONIUM There was never a dull moment during the shooting of MGMs “Hold On!” starring the famous rock ‘n’ roll group, Herman’s Hermits. Here are some of the things that took place in the comedy : Shelley Fabares had her dress ripped off by 200 screaming teen-age extras. Hortense Petra had hysterics and fainted, Sue Ane Langdon was thrown from an ambulance. Three supporting players were pushed into a swimming pool. Herman’s Hermits had their coats and shirts torn to shreds by a mob, and an entire bandstand, garden house and 200 tables and chairs were demolished. Explained Producer Sam Katzman to set visitors, “It’s a musical comedy.” POLICE UNRAVEL DEBBIE'S THEFT MGM studio policemen were called in when the zebra-upholstered, tassel bedecked electric cart given to Debbie Reynolds for her use during filming of “The Singing Nun” was found to be missing. The mystery was soon solved. Out in the cart for a sightseeing tour of the studio was Herman, the leader of Herman’s Hermits, who also was at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for the group’s first starring roles in “Hold On!” filmed on sound stages adjoining those of Debbie’s picture. When a sheepish Herman returned the cart to Debbie, she told him that she wouldn’t prosecute providing that he would give her an autographed photo for her daughter, who it appears was one of his great fans. The deal was made. 10 A Hit Parade of tunes is offered by Herman’s Hermits, teen-age singing sensations, in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s rollicking romantic comedy, ‘‘Hold On!”’, their first starring picture.
