Still 1719-19 Jailhouse Rock Mat 2-B GERMAN FRAULEINS, LIKE U.S. GIRLS, ALL WANTED TO MEET ELVIS PRESLEY! Asa G.I. stationed in Germany, Fivis Presley proved himself as popular with his fellow servicemen during his two years in the U.S. Army as this phenomenal young singing star has with his army of fans throughout the world. Now once again back in civilian life, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is marking his return with the release of his big hit, “Jailhouse Rock,’ as a “Welcome Home” attraction. Elvis plays a strong dramatic role in this story of an exjailbird who becomes a singing celebrity, and the CinemaScope picture features six Presley song hits. While he was in Germany, teen-age girls employed every trick in the book to meet their idol whenever they were permitted to catch a glimpse of him. American girls had been doing the same thing long before he entered the service. There is the story of the Detroit teen-ager who went on a “sit-down strike” on the floor in front of Presley’s backstage dressing room. She wouldn’t budge and Elvis had to leave by a side exit. In Dallas, a too-young-looking “nurse” made her way to the door of Elvis’ hotel room with the excuse, “Mr. Presley sent for me — he’s sick.” That’s as far as she got. The “reporter” and “old hometown chum” gags have also been tried innumerable times. But a fourteen-yearold girl from Van Nuys, California, came up with a more novel idea. In fact, it was unique — it worked! Linda Williams, a blonde stunner even at fourteen, simply entered a television beauty contest, won it and consequently landed a role with Presley in “Jailhouse Rock.” She insists, however, that she wasn’t a Presley fan. “I flipped for his records,” she says, ‘but I wasn’t so sure about him. I was just curious and wanted to find out for myself what he really was like, Nearly all the girls in the contest—there must have been about a thousand—entered in the hope they’d get to meet Elvis.” Presley, himself, plus Producer Pandro S. Berman and Director Richard Thorpe, picked Linda for the “Jailhouse Rock” role from four finalists. Then she donned a bathing suit, in which she looked more like nineteen than fourteen, and did her big scene with Elvis. Her biggest thrill came at the day’s end. When he said goodbye, Elvis gave Linda a big hug and kiss. Is she a Presley fan, now? “Am I,” she gasps. “I certainly see eye to eye with those German girls who tried to meet him. Elvis is the end, a living doll!” “JAILHOUSE ROCK” FLVIS’ “WELCOME HOME” ATTRACTION Elvis Presley is back—out of the Army—and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is presenting his big hit, “Jailhouse Rock,” as a “Welcome Home” attraction. Elvis has three “girl friends” in this picture, Judy Tyler, Anne Neyland and Jennifer Holden, The latter, a former Chicago model, played her first movie role in “Jailhouse Rock” and she’s the blonde with whom Elvis played his longest love scene to date. Also in featured roles are Mickey Shaughnessy, who has won wide popularity as a comedian but who plays a straight dramatic role in ‘Jailhouse Rock” as Presley’s prison cellmate; and Dean Jones, teenage favorite, who recently scored in “Never So Few.” Presley sings six songs in the film. They include the title song, “Treat Me Nice,” “I Want To Be Free,” “Young and Beautiful,’ “Don’t Leave Me Now” and “Baby, I Don’t Care.”
