Siegel Production, SOME CAME RUNNING, New American Library, one of the largest paperbound houses in the world, has planned one of the biggest book campaigns in their histary for the 75¢ Signet paperbound edition of James Jones’s SOME CAME RUNNING. NAL, who instituted and promoted the first big movie-book campaign with Jones’s From Here To Eternity (which sold almost three million copies in its Signet paperbound edition and was read by some twelve million people) is going to distribute three quarters of a million copies of SOME CAME RUNNING to meet the opening playdates of the film in late December. Subsequent printings will be made, as usual, as playdates come in. SOME CAME RUNNING, the first book Jones has written since From Here To Eternity — which won raves from the critics, The 1952 National Book Award (was a Book-of-the-Month Club sensation), and cleaned up Oscars in its movie version — will be backed by a tremendous world campaign tying in the film with the book. The entire field force of NAL and its distributor, Independent News Company, will be alerted to give full time attention to local and regional tie-ins. Promotion and publicity aids, with movie credits lavishly displayed on all, have been prepared. Here’s a list of some of the promotion plans NAL will do to back the film-book tie-in: a) Display cartons — in two colors —to hold 20 books — will be displayed on over 20,000 store counters. (shown) b) Rack cards — in two colors — to be put in over 10,000 paperbound book racks. (shown) c) Dealer bulletins —to be on display on 50,000 newsstands and store counters. d) Imprinted dayglo cellulose tape for point-of-sale (store windows, etc.) in two colors. (shown) e) Special brochure on film and book to be sent to wholesalers, key retail dealers, chain store buyers, ete. f) Playdate bulletins — in two colors — to alert wholesalers of dates coming up in their area. g) Special stats of film reviews to be prepared and sent to wholesalers and field force. h) Special telegrams to be sent to top 100 wholesalers at time of film’s premiere. i) Book trade publicity, j) Special publicity mailing of book and releases to book pages of newspapers and radio-ty book reviewers. k) For overseas promotion letters will be sent to foreign distributors telling them to contact local Loew’s office and supplying them with packages of the same point-of-sale promotion material as prepared for domestic use. Over 100,000 paperbound outlets — newsstands, drug stores, variety and chain stores, air, bus and rail terminals, department stores and bookstores (regular and college) will be displaying the Signet edition of SOME CAME RUNNING. See promotion check-list, below, and plan a strong local-level campaign designed to sell the book and tickets to your engagement. Local dealers selling the Signet edition will be glad to cooperate with you. YOUR PROMOTION CHECK-LIST 1.
