An Movita Doffs Sarong For Modern Role Exotic Mexican Actress Stars in “Girl From Ri aE a ns ae Slender, olive-skinned, and easy to look at, Movita, lovely star of Monogram’s “Girl from Rio”, now at the Ba sec) theatre, is what casting directors and Island natives alike declare the perfect Polynesian type. Indeed, this fact almost proved her undoing. American by birth, Mexican by blood, Movita very nearly became a Polynesian by profession. She was born in Nogales, Arizona, and educated in Los Angeles. While a student in high school, Movita demonstrated a talent in amateur theatricals which led her to seek professional opportunities at the Spanish theatres in Los Angeles. She appeared in many productions there, and later branched into vaudeville in a singing and dancing act. Her vaudeville tours took her as far afield as South America and Mexico City, won her considerable renown, and eventually led to picture opportunities. It was “Mutiny on the Bounty”, in which she played Franchot Tone’s native wife, that made a South Sea Islander of Movita. She then signed a long term contract with Monogram, and moved to that studio for “Paradise Isle”, in which she played a na tive girl. Movita continued her Polynesian career in “The Hurricane” and then moved back to her home studio, where she starred in Monogram’s “Rose of the Rio Grande”. This was the young actress's first opportunity to appear as a daughter of the land of her parents. Next she made “Wolf Call” for Monogram, appearing as an Indian maid, and now “Girl from Rio”, which is the story of a South American singing star who accidentally gets involved in murder. In this picture Movita has a chance to wear gorgeous clothes, and proves that she can, if necessary, be a glamour girl. Outstanding in the cast are Warren Hull, Clay Clement, Soledad Jiminez, Adele Pearce, and Alan Baldwin. “Girl from Rio” is an E. B. Derr production. Throwing her career to the winds, Marquita joins Annette (ADELE PEARCE), her brother's wife, and the two girls try to track down the real murderer—the man who set fire to the nightclub where Annette and Carlos (ALAN BALDWIN) were dancing, and killed the night-watchman. Steven (WARREN HULL), Marquita's fiance and agent, arrives to help the girls. He introduces Marquita to Mitchell (CLAY CLEMENT), proprietor of the nightclub that had burned, and now operating a beautiful new club on the insurance money he collected from the fire. Steven gets Mitchell to hire Marquita as a singer, and she makes a hit with his customers. But Vicki (KAY LINAKER), Mitchell's girl friend, is jealous of the attention Mitchell is paying to Marquita. She follows Marquita one night, and soon finds out that she is living with Annette, and that Marquita is Carlos’ sister. Vicki faces Marquita with this information just as the TROPIC VENUS Movita is the “Girl From Rio” in the movie of that title now at the theatre. While she is singing, Marquita sees Vicki tell Mitchell who she is. She stays at the microphone singing as long as she can, slipping in a code line containing a plea for help to Steven, who is listening over the radio. Mitchell is waiting with a gun for Marquita to finish her number. Marquita dashes into Mitchell's office and grabs another gun from his desk. Steven arrives with an insurance investigator who was suspicious of Mitchell's fire. Steven and the investigator rush into Mitchell's office just as Marquita fires at the man. The bullet misses Mitchell, but hits the floor. It is a “tracer” bullet, and starts a fire. Mitchell, faced with this evidence, confesses that he had started the other fire in this same way in order to get the insurance, and in order to put a murder rap on Carlos, whom he wanted out of the way so he could woo Annette. Carlos is freed, and .Marquita and Steven marry and go back to South America to take up once more their re spective careers. Sing You Sinner! But Warren Hull Who Studied For Vocal Career — Doesn't! Sometimes Warren Hull thinks it is a disadvantage to be a good actor. Hull, who is playing opposite Movita in Monogram’s “Girl from Rio”, Now at the’ c 0 oe sees theatre, gets no chance to sing in this musical, although he first won fame as a singing star. In fact, Warren is such an accomplished actor, that he rarely has to sing to depend on his voice for jobs. He studied voice at the University of Rochester, and after graduation took lessons from the former teacher of John Charles Thomas. When Warren went to New York, he immediately was signed for a small part in a Shubert production, and the very next season he had the starring role in “The Student Prince”. Hull spent several seasons on Broadway as a musical comedy star, and appeared in such well known operettas as “My Maryland” and “The Love Song”. From the stage he went to radio, still as a singing star, and appeared in “The Gibson Family” and “The Hit Parade”. But when Warren came to Hollywood it was a different story. Producers ignored the fact that he first made a name as a singer, and cast him in straight dramatic roles in pictures like “Personal Maid’s Secret”, “Her Husband’s Secretary”, and “The Walking Dead”. Hull made such a hit as an actor, that even an early love, radio, has forgotten that he has a truly fine singing voice. As master of ceremonies on the “Good News” program, he leaves the singing to people like Tony Martin, or Doug McPhail, or Allan Jones. Warren doesn’t mind not being a singing star, because he has a chance to play better dramatic roles by not being tagged “singer”. However, he DOES have a swell singing voice, and hopes producers and the public remember that fact. In “Girl from Rio”, the story of a South American singing star who gets mixed up with murder, Hull leaves the singing to Movita, star of the film. Others outstanding in the cast include Clay Clement, Soledad Jiminez, Adele Pearce, and Alan Baldwin. “Girl from Rio”, an E. B. Derr production, was directed by Lambert Hillyer. t Some Sheen! The silver sequin dress Movita wears in Monogram’s “Girl from Rio” which is now at the................ theatre, is considered one of the most difficult pieces of wardrobe to photograph that has ever appeared before a camera. The design for this dress was refused by 50 cameramen until Paul Ivano, photographer of “Girl from Rio”, accepted it for this film. = <p =e <p SP <P o e «< «<P «fe <P <r t t t t t t t t LOVE UNDER A LATIN MOON GIRL FROM RIO" yee one THEATRE STARS MOVITA Music and murder don’t seem to mix very often, but they do mix, and very well, in Monogram’s “Girl from Rio”, which is playing now at the......... theatre. “Girl from Rio”, which stars the glamorous Movita, is a murder mystery played against a musical background. It is the story of a beautiful South American singer who becomes involved in crime to save her brother from a false murder charge. Movita, who first won screen fame as a singer and dancer, has never been in better voice. She lends it with telling effect to the lovely “Romance in Rio”, and to the gay, insouciant “Burro Song”, which promises to join the hit parade. “Romance in Rio” was written by Johnny Lange and Lew Porter, and “Burro Song” by Emile de Recat. These are only two of the outstanding musical numbers in “Girl from Rio”. Outstanding in the cast are Warren Hull, Clay Clement, Adele Pearce, Alan Baldwin, Soledad Jiminez, and Richard Tucker.
