The Story Of “Hoosier Schoolboy” (NOT FOR PUBLICATION) ‘THE prime industry of the smug city of Greenfield is milk. Dom1nating this industry is John J. Matthew, Sr., (William Gould), who is head of the cooperative dairy for the protection of the local farmers against urban exploitation. His son Jack is regarded as the town’s playboy, bored by the smalltown attitude of the people. : As Mary Evans (Anne Nagel) the new schoolteacher, alights from the train, she is confronted with a very discouraging scene. The farmers are striking against Matthew who has forced the milk price so low that they can’t even eke out expenses. To save himself from bankruptcy, he purchases milk from neighboring farmers to make daily shipments to Chicago. Mary goes to the town’s hotel and is amused by the combination bellboy and elevator operator, Shockey (Mickey Rooney). Shockey takes Mary to her room where she is surprised -to find Jack asleep and very much intoxicated. She rings for the hotel clerk who explains who the young man is, but his social prestige makes no difference to Mary. She is disgusted. In the meanwhile, Shockey is having a verbal battle with a schoolmate, Roger (Bradley Metcalf) who is acting very superior in front of his girl friend to Mickey Rooney and Anne Nagel in “Hoosier Schoolboy.” One Col Cat on Maco Shockey because Shockey lives on the other side of the tracks. At school next day, Shockey and Roger get into a fight because Roger makes fun of Shockey’s dad, a shell-shocked war veteran whose only relief from his war experiences is alcohol. The two are taken to the school principal who suspends Shockey, until the next board meeting. At a meeting of the school board. Shockey’s actions are discussed. The members of the board are all for expelling him but Mary claims responsibility for his future conduct. Jack attends a basket social of the Parents-Teachers Association and contrives to lunch with Mary. Carter interrupts with a bad case of D. T.’s, demanding his son. Jack comes to his assistance and with Mary and Shockey, takes him home. Mary and Jack are in love. Jack gets Carter a job with his father’s organization. Sympathizing with the farmers, Jack goes to his father hoping to stop the strike but his father is adamant. The farmers are, by this time, in a desperate mood. Carter is given a load of milk to drive to Creighead County but doesn’t know that the farmers are blocking all roads. In a thrilling drive—his shellshocked mind ablaze as he sees the farmers blocking the road, Carter’s truck turns over and he is fatally injured. Matthew, Sr., is made to see his mistake. Mary and Jack decide to MICEEY Rooney’s curiosity and desire for learning prevented “The Hoosier Schoolboy” from shooting for more than thirty minutes. Considered a small time, thirty minutes is on the same par wtih three hours in the eyes of a motion picture crew, where delay costs thousands of dollars. Mickey displayed an intense interest in lighting during the making of the production. One afternoon when he wasn’t scheduled to appear in several scenes, he was instructed by the supervisor of the power plant, who showed him every switch from minor to major, including the by-controls. Later on the set, Mickey heard the camera crew yelling for more juice. Figuring the fault lay at the power station and remembering his nstructions that major switch No. 2 would “up” the juice in almost every department, he followed instructions. The result was a series of burned-out fuses, which took thirty minutes to replace. So, in repentance, Mickey arranged an _ impromptu show entertaining with singing and dancing. But—Mickey wasn’t allowed near the control room again. “The Hoosier Schoolboy” Scheduled to Openers: ate then. theatre with Mickey enacting the title role. While at a party, Miss Loring was introduced to Shields and decided he was star material. Approaching him on the subject, she learned that his tennis was taking up most of his time and that he was leaving the following night for a tournament in the East. Telling her husband of her conviction about the boy, Lighton suggested that Frank take a test the next morning, which he did.
