Cartoonist Helped Cast Film Version of 'Tailspin Tommy’
% It took cartoonist Hal Forrest approximately 11 years to build his character of Skeeter in the popular “Tailspin Tommy” newspaper strip up to his present popularity, but it took Forrest only five minutes to pick this character for the screen version of his strip.
Many actors were interviewed for the role of Skeeter in ‘Mystery Plane’, the initial film based on the “Tailspin Tommy” strip in a series of six,
but producer Pau! Malvern, Forrest |
and director George Wagener had still visualized a different type.
One day an agent called Malvern and said he had just the type for the part. But that was only one of many agents who had enthusiastically called. However, the agent persuaded the three to take a look at the test of his client.
The test was shown and the actor involved was great, and a ringer for Skeeter. He was signed for the role. Now Milburn Stone, a cousin of Fred Stone, will be seen in the entire series. As the pal of Tailspin Tommy, Stone turns in a fine sincere performance.
