Even above the roar of Broadway, they have no difficulty in hearing a call from the film capital when the invitation involves work in motion pictures. But not so John Beal. I the leading role of the _ hilarious Monogram comedy, “One Thrilling Night,” was inclined to “take his time’ when Hollywood producers were besieging him with offers. Born in Joplin, Missouri, John attended the public schools there, and afterward completed his education at the University of Pennsylvania. In college his performances in Mask and Wig plays attracted the attention of Jasper Deeter, owner of the famous Hedgerow theatre near Philadelphia. Deeter urged Beal to enter the theatre professionally, and after his graduation the young student was accepted as a member of the Hedgerow group. Beal had always been ambitiious to become an artist, and some time later he went to New York and enrolled at the Art Students’ League for a course in illustrating. But his studies were interrupted when he had a chance to appear with Frank Craven in “That’s Gratitude.” His later success in “Another Language’”’ took him to Hollywood to enact his original role in the screen version of the stage play. It was his performance in this. picture’ that brought Beal offers from many film producers, but the actor disregarded them all and returned to Broadway for “Russet Mantle,” “She Loves Me Not” and other plays. Though he has now capitulated to Hollywood, and appears in many pictures, Beal reserves a part of each year for stage work, and appears frequently in New York. Wanda McKay appears opposite Beal in the leading feminine role of “One Thrilling Night,’ and the cast also includes Warren Hymer, Tom Neal, Barbara Pepper and J. Farrell MacDonald. The picture was produced by A. W. Hackel, with William Beaudine directing from an original laugh-provoking screenplay by Joseph Hoffman. Ambition John Beal’s earliest childhood ambition was to be a prize fighter, a desire probably suggested when he used the first money earned as an errand boy in his father’s general store in Joplin, Missouri, to purchase a pair of boxing gloves. Hymer, son of the well known John B. Hymer, actor, stage director and writer, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and attended various parochial schools in New York City. Later he went to Yale University, where he was enrolled in Professor Baker’s famous drama course, familiarly known as ‘47 Workshop.” Here he was thoroughly schooled in dramatic construction, characterization, plot and other branches essential to the budding playwright. After his graduation Hymer traveled for some time, and finally made his theatrical debut on the London stage in “Crime,” written by his father. Subsequently he appeared in “The Grey Fox” and other stage plays, and in 1928 went to Hollywood under contract for motion pictures, appearing in some of the screen’s first talking pictures.
