“The western heroes of the films,” contends Hoot, “are actually the outgrowth of the circus—or the wild west show, which is much the same thing. Up to a comparatively few years ago there was little roping among cowbands, and those who practice it today received their inspiration largely from wild west performers. As a matter of fact, the first trick roper in the United States was Ora Peso, a Mexican brought into the country 20 years ago to become a feature with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West.

A thoroughly entertaining western film is “Outlaw Trail,’ the Monogram “Trail Blazers” drama which opened an engagement at the TENE: theatre last night.
A popular trio of screen cowboys, in the persons of Hoot Gibson, Bob Steele and Chief Thundercloud, are featured in the leading roles, and carry the action at a whirlwind pace. How the cowboys proceed in their campaign against the renegades forms the basis of a thrilling and interesting film.
Jennifer Holt plays the principal feminine role, and the cast also includes Cy Kendall, Rocky Camron, Jim Thorpe, George Eldridge, Bud Osborne, Hal Price, John Bridges and Charles King—all forthright western types who add conviction to the picture.
“Outlaw Trail” was produced and directed by Robert Tansey, who has staged the film with a skillful hand. Situation and incident are expertly interwoven in the _ screenplay of Frances Kavanaugh, based on an original story by Alvin Neitz. Edward Kull’s photography is uniformly good.

Hoot Gibson Inspired by Stunts of ‘Show’ Cowboys
A youngster’s determination to emulate the horseman
ship of professional cowboys, whose feats filled him with a sort of awe, was the force which launched Hoot Gibson on a campaign of training which covered his entire boy
hood life.
Gibson comes to the theatre on “Outlaw Trail,” Monogram’s thrilling western drama in which he is featured with Bob Steele and Chief Thundercloud.
Hoot was born on a ranch near Tekamah, Nebraska, in a section which was the home of many cowboys and down-to-earth westerners. He was little more than a baby when he learned to ride a horse, and his skill increased during the years, in surroundings which he accepted as a matter of course. But it was his later attendance at circuses, wild west shows and particularly the town’s only motion picture theatre that fired his ambition, for

This, decided Hoot, was the life he wanted. How well he learned his lessons was proven when, at the age of 18, he won the all-around cowboy championship of the world at the famous annual Roundup at Pendleton, Oregon.
