The burlesque show of which Dixie Barlow is the star is closed by the police led by Mr. Baxter, a millionaire. Gil Gailord, lawyer for the show, gets Dixie and the gitls off by having Dixie put on probation for 180 days, and placed in the custody of her mother. Dixie is in reality an orphan, so Gil gets Mattie from the old ladies’ home to act as her mother. He also tells Dixie to use Tim Raynor's penthouse apartment, thinking that Tim has gone out of town to escape conviction as a bookie.
Tim is separated from Irene, his wife, but as he is behind in his alimony she decides to move into the penthouse. Tim's man-of-all-work, Maxwell, has mistakenly gotten tickets to California for the week following, so atter Dixie and Mattie have taken possession of the penthouse, Tim and then Irene also move in.
Gil gets Dixie a job at a night club and invites Jeff Baxter, son of old Baxter, to the opening. Dixie makes a play for him as she wants to have revenge on Baxter for closing the show, and Jeffs falls for her. In the meantime Gil and Dixie have fallen in love without realizing it, and Mattie is tryng to foster the romance. After a dinner party Jeff proposes marriage to Dixie, and his father is furious, later attempting to buy off the girl for $20,000. She scorntully gives it back to him, saying she would rather marry Jeff.
Mattie, not wanting Dixie to marry Jeff, goes to the police and tells them that she is not Dixie’s mother. The wedding is stopped just in time, and Dixie is hauled up before the judge on charges. Gil defends her, and presents papers showing that Dixie is willing to be adopted legally by Mattie. The latter agrees, and the papers are signed. The judge charges Gil with fraud in presenting Mattie as Dixie's mother, but agrees that if Dixie is married to Gil she will not have to testify against him. Dixie is willing, so the case is dismissed and she and Gil are married.
