Trumpeter Goes "Scat"
Johnnie “Scat” Davis, according to popular agreement, is the white Cab Callowey—or else Calloway is the colored Johnnie Davis. It all depends on how one looks at it.
Johnnie comes to the ENGSLLEtON: yc ae in ‘“Sarong Girl,” Monogram’s lilting musical picture which stars the seductive Ann Corio, loveliest lady of burlesque.
_ Young Davis was a mere youngster when he stumbled on the style of singing which was to make him an overnight sensation, and estab
jlish him as what is known in rug
cutting circles as a “scat” singer. This type of vocalist, be it known, is one who wilfully or otherwise forgets the words to a song and
fills in the missing spaces with such
inventions as “hi-de-ho,” “whoaho-de-hoho” and all stuff like thatthere.
Davis, playing a trumpet in Jack O’Grady’s orchestra, was assigned one night to sing “Don’t Bring Me Posies,” which he regarded as rather silly, anyhow. He began “kidding” the song, promptly forgot the words, and fell back on the hide-ho’s. The rendition made a hit, and Johnnie was a scat singer from then on.
Others appearing with Miss Corio in “Sarong Girl’ are Tim & Irene, Bill Henry, Damian O’Flynn, Mantan Moreland and Henry Kolker. Philip N. Krasne produced, and Arthur Dreifuss directed from an original screenplay by Arthur Hoerl and Charles R. Marion, with additional dialogue by Tim Ryan.
