Thrilling Tommy” Film Hit Stars John Trent
**Tailspin
(Review)
A thrilling air drama of the men who guard the gateways to America is Monogram’s “Sky Patrol”, a new “Tailspin Tommy” picture, starring John Trent, which is playing now at the theatre.
“Sky Patrol” is also the story of a boy who hated to kill, even in the line of duty, and it explains how the youth overcame this phobia, when he learns that gun fire is the only law the lawless understand.
Tailspin Tommy and his pals, Skeeter and Betty Lou, are stationed at an army post near the border to train army pilots for the newly formed “Sky Patrol”, organized to protect the U. S. against smugglers and spies. Tommy’s protege is young Carter Meade, who wanted to be a doctor, and save lives, but who must follow his family tradition and go into the army.
Carter gets the first clue to the identity of a band of smugglers, but is captured by them when he refuses to kill in self-defense. Tommy and Skeeter set out to rescue the boy, and in doing so become involved in a series of thrilling adventures that reach a climax when Tommy, forced at the point of a gun to send a false message to army headquarters, tries to get a message through in code to Betty Lou.

MARRIAGE HELPS, STATES YOUNG BLONDE STAR
Marjorie Reynolds is one young Hollywood actress who sincerely believes that marriage is an asset to a cinema star, rather than a detriment.
Several years ago, it was the undivided opinion of Hollywood press agents that when a beautiful star, regardless of her talent, became married, she was practically finished in films. But Marjorie believes that marriage in Hollywood depends wholly on the vocation of the husband or wife.
“Tt’s much better to be married to someone who is in the same profession,” she says. “There’s bound to be more understanding. But primarily there must be respect on both sides. Without that, any marriage can go blooey.”
Miss Reynolds, the Betty Lou of Monogram’s ‘Tailspin Tommy’ series, is now seen playing opposite John Trent in “Sky Patrol”, current of the series at the theatre.
In the cast are Milburn Stone, Jackie Coogan, Boyd Irwin, Bryant Washburn, LeRoy Mason and Dickie Jones. Howard Bretherton directed.
Star Flyer!
John Trent, Monogram film star who portrays Tailspin Tommy in the series based on the comic strip character, likes to fiy his own plane around the country between pictures.
In "Sky Patrol", which is now at the theatre, Trent, a former transport pilot, was allowed to do his own flying for the first time on the screen.

acts and lives the part. It is no effort at all for John Trent to play the adventurous young flyer, for that’s what he is in real life.
Milburn Stone is Skeeter, and admirably lives up to his comic strip namesake. Stone has plenty of opportunity for comedy in this picture, and makes the most of it. Marjorie Reynolds, as Betty Lou, the girl in the case, makes many a masculine heart beat faster.
A special triumph was the acting of Jackie Coogan, as young Carter Meade. Coogan has his finest acting chance since childhood days as the courageous young pilot who knew only one fear—guns. Coogan gives a masterly performance.
Others outstanding in the cast include Boyd Irwin, Jason Robards and Bryant Washburn.
Howard Bretherton directed “Sky Patrol” from the screenplay by Joseph West and Norton S. Parker.
It was based on the “Tailspin Tommy” cartoon strip by Hal Forrest.

John Trent, Star of “Sky Patrol” at... Theatre, Former Transport Pilot
John Trent is one of the few actors depicting daring aviator roles on the screen, who can really fly. Trent, who was a transport pilot before his entry into films, has more than 3000 hours in the air to his credit.
When Monogram decided to produce a series of air pictures based on the ‘Tailspin Tommy’ comic strip, the only logical choice among Hollywood’s ranks was John Trent, an actor who was a flyer. Thus far John has appeared in three pictures based on the exploits of ‘Tailspin Tommy’. His current production, “Sky Patrol” is now playing at the theatre.
Trent first became interested in aviation after graduation from Orange High School, Orange, California. He learned to fly at the Air Tech School, San Diego and later attended the Hancock Foundation College, Santa Maria, California.
After John obtained 2000 certified air hours, TWA hired him as co-pilot in 1934. He was later promoted to captain pilot. It was on one of his runs that he met B. P. Schulberg of Paramount who hired him away from the line to become an actor.
“Sky Patrol” is a thrilling story of sky smugglers. Seen in the cast are Milburn Stone, Marjorie Reynolds, Jackie Coogan, Bryant Washburn and ason Robards. Howard Bretherton directed.

STUNT PILOT NEW “TAILSPIN
The world’s greatest stunt pilot does the aerobatics in Monogram’s “Sky Patrol,” Tailspin Tommy picture which is now at the theatre.
His name is Tex Rankin, and whenever a flying picture is made in Hollywood, the producer is certain to try to get Tex to act as technical advisor on the stunting.
Rankin has won numerous trophies at air meets. He has competed with fliers from all over the world, and is the international champion in stunt flying.
Tex is an old friend of John Trent. Trent, former transport pilot, is the star of “Sky Patrol,” and he knew Tex Rankin in pre-movie days, when John was flying a transport plane on the cross-country run and Tex was a flying instructor.
When Trent first started to play Tailspin Tommy in the Monogram

series based on the famous comic strip character, he insisted that Tex Rankin, ace of air acrobatics, he called in as technical advisor and chief stunt pilot.
Tex was allowed to go to town in the last Tailspin Tommy picture, “Stunt Pilot,’ which told the story of the fellows who fly for the movies.
i In “Sky Patrol,” however, he acted
only as technical advisor.
“Sky Patrol” is the story of the branch of the army reserves that guard the borders of the United States. Trent, as Tailspin Tommy, is acting as their instructor when he is forced to battle a gang of smugglers singlehanded in an effort to solve the mystery of an outlaw amphibian plane.
Outstanding in the cast are Marjorie Reynolds, Milburn Stone, Jason Robards, Bryant Washburn and Jackie Coogan.
Howard Bretherton directed with Paul Malvern the producer.
HOW TO CONCENTRATE! Follow Hal Forrests Example Successful
— Gnd &e
To gain the greatest amount of efficiency in his working periods, Hal Forrest, creator of the Tailspin Tommy cartoon strip, leaves definite orders that he must not be disturbed. The law enforcement agency of this edict consists of his wife and his twelve year old daughter, Betty Lou, who serves as a model for the Betty Lou of the strip.
Forrest, who writes his own continuity, also serves as story advisor on the Monogram movie series based on the adventures of Tailspin Tommy.
When he and the director and writer assigned by the studio to do the script get together at Forrest’s Palm Springs home, the studio people have little difficulty concentrating because there are no interruptions when Forrest is working. 3
So strict is Forrest’s edict on the “no interruptions” that Mrs. Forrest once declared that she wouldn’t bother him even if there was a fire, because he would want to work until he couldn’t see on account of the smoke.
The latest Tailspin Tommy picture, “Sky Patrol” is now at the theatre. It is the story of the army reserves who guard the borders of the United States. John Trent is Tailspin Tommy, Marjorie Reynolds is Betty Lou, and Milburn Stone is Skeeter.

“SKY PATROL” SETS THRILLSPEED RECORDS
——— ee ee saa tee Theatre’s Attraction Exciting
Entertainment —— EF (Review)
An enthusiastic opening night audience was thrilled by Monogram’s “Sky Patrol,” third “Tailspin Tommy” film, which began a run of .......... days at the theatre yesterday.
“Sky Patrol” has Tailspin Tommy and his pals, Skeeter and Betty Lou, working with the U. S. Army, training army fliers for the newly formed sky patrol, organized to prevent smuggling and spying near the borders of the United States.
The real hero of “Sky Patrol” is Carter Meade, played by Jackie Coogan, a young man who wanted to be a doctor, but who must live up to the family tradition of “army.” His father, Colonel Meade, cannot understand the boy’s phobia—a fear of firing guns.
Young Meade is the first of the Sky Patrol to have a run-in with the smugglers, and when he bails out of his flaming plane because he cannot bring himself to fire his guns, Meade is captured by the criminals.
It is Tailspin Tommy following a clue, who is off to the rescue, and how he and Skeeter, with Betty Lou’s help, save Carter and capture the smugglers, and how Carter overcomes his fear of guns in time to save all of their lives, forms thrilling screen entertainment.
John Trent, former transport pilot, again plays “Tailspin Tommy,” and is rapidly becoming a_ favorite with young audiences.
Milburn Stone, as Skeeter, shows rare comedy talent. Marjorie Reynolds, the “typical American girl,” wins applause as Betty Lou, who plays an active part in Tommy’s dangerous exploits.
Young Jackie Coogan, who has had tough luck ever since he grew up, has his finest comeback chance as Carter Meade, and he fulfills it admirably. Coogan is especially good in the scene where he overcomes his phobia, realizing in a brief screen moment that civilized society must be protected against its outlaws.
Others outstanding in the cast of “Sky Patrol” are Bryant Washburn as the villainous Bainbridge, Jason Robards, Boyd Irwin, and _ Dickie Jones.
“Sky Patrol” was directed by Howard Bretherton, and is a Paul Malvern production.
