A native of Oklahoma, and a descendant of famed Indian warrior Geronimo, Spade was practically born with a violin clutched in his grubby little fists for both his father and grandfather were fiddlers of the old school folk dance variety. The family moved to California when Cooley was just a “young un’ where he went to school and worked on his father’s farm—it was too small to be called a ranch—during the summer vacation. Spade had a hankering for music, but nearly all of his non-school hours were spent in farming, so he had little time to fiddle with his fiddle. One afternoon, while he paused from his plowing to roll a cigarette, the mule (her name was Tizzie) kicked him in the face. When Spade awoke in the hospital, he decided there must be an easier way of making a living. So, he got a job as a fiddler in a small cate 1n Modesto, California and took to smoking tailor made cigarettes. Then came a long spell of playing with various bands, even a short session where he was cowboy Roy Rogers’ stand-in and played with the Sons of the Pioneers, before he formed a band of his own. The rest is history, for in just a few years he built the Cooley group into the top western band in the country and lifted hill-billy music from the country barn dance enjoyed by just a few to its present stature of being an important segment of American music.
