THE STORY
(Not for Publication)
While Lamont Cranston (Kane Richmond), The Shadow, and his butler Shrevvie (George Chandler) are in a flophouse investigating the murder of an art dealer and the theft of a $250,000 jade statuette, Cranston is attacked by Ox Welsh (Jack Overman), but overpowers him. Cranston also rescues Terry Blake (James Cardwell), who is trying to locate the jade lady, from Lefty (Anthony Warde), Ox’s henchman. Alfred Kester (Douglas Wood), crooked art dealer, tries to get the statuette through a woman named Rose (Claire Carleton), who seems to know where the stolen art treasure is. Kester is found murdered in the apartment of Anne Walsh (Frances Robinson). By misinterpreting testimony of model Gilda Marsh (Jo Carroll Dennison), detective Cardona (James Flavin) finds grounds to arrest Cranston, but he is freed by his uncle, Police Commissioner Weston (Pierre Watkin), for lack of evidence. Margo Lane (Barbara Reed), Lamont's fiance, and her maid Jennie (Dorothea Kent) find Anne murdered, and Lamont is re-arrested and again released. Certain that the three murders are all related to the missing jade lady, Cranston continues his investigation in the studio of artist Jon Field (George Lewis), which has also been searched by several other suspects trying to get the statuette. With the help of the two elderly and slightly offcenter women, Eftie (Almira Sessions) and Millie (Nora Cecil), who own the apartment house where the two murders occurred, Cranston discovers that Ox had killed the first man for the jade lady, but that it was stolen from him by Field, and that the last two murders were committed by Gilda. When Cranstson turns his information, the murderers and the jade lady over to the police, Blake, who reveals himself as an insurance investigator, gives him a reward, which he turns over to the police fund.
BARBARA REED A TRIPLE THREAT SCREEN ACTRESS
“T once said I’d never give myself completely to acting,”
remarked Barbara Reed between scenes of Monogram’s “The Missing Lady,” in which she co-stars with Kane Richmond. “That was before I retired from films for four years, and now I’m back I still haven’t changed my mind.”
At the height of a film career¥ which got its triumphal start with her appearance in the Deanna Durbin “Three Smart Girls’ film, Miss Reed amazed Hollywood circles when she suddenly decided that she had had enough of film making. The young actress then busied herself with ceramics, until she was spotted one day in a market by producer Joe Kaufman. “How would you like ao appear in my Shadow series?” he asked. The idea sounded reasonable and Barbara had begun to miss the studios, so she agreed to make a return to films. However, she did so with the proviso that she would not have to devote all her time to her acting, even when a film was shooting.
Barbara Reed has kept true to
come a triple threat on the Hollywood artistic horizon. She and actress Ida Lupino started collaborating on a novel titled “Miss Pennington,” which has film, magazine and book possibilities. As for Miss Reed’s ceramic talents, they’re not going to waste, either. Lots of bids have come in for her to do private work. Barbara intends to continue her cinema career as long as she can take time out for writing and other artistic accomplishments Which she might have a yen to do.

SHADOW MYSTERY FILM DRAMA
(Review)
There’s enough deep mystery in ‘The Missing Lady,” whjch opened yesterday at the theatre, to satisfy the most fastidious who-done-it fan. The latest of the Monogram Shadow mysteries is the best in the series in matter of suspense, dramatic action and compelling story.
Kane Richmond is again seen as*
the cunning Shadow, who visits obscure places of the underworld to clean out crime. He doubles his film activities as Lamont Cranston, playboy, and in his dual capacity is likeable, energetic and convincing. Barbara Reed is his co-star and fiancee, who is not only attractive but is fast proving herself a morethan-capable actress in the third Shadow picture she has made Since her return to the screen. George Chandler is good for laughs as the Shadow’s inquisitive butler, while blonde Dorothea Kent is excellent as the not-so-bright girlfriend. James Flavin is the excitable police inspector, always keen to put Richmond behind the bars, only to see him freed by police commissioner Pierre Watkin. James Cardwell, Claire Carleton, Jack Overman and Jo Carroll Dennison are among the excellent supporting cast.
Richmond and butler Chandler are attacked in a flophouse by sixfoot-three Jack Overman, while they are investigating the theft of a $250,000 jade statuette. They overcome the big menace and rescue Cardwell, who in reality is an insurance investigator. An art dealer is murdered seeking the statuette, and blame is cast upon Richmond, who is put in jail, but released by his uncle, the police commissioner. Two mysterious murders follow before Richmond, as the Shadow, solves the criminal puzzle.
Phil Karlson’s direction is very good, and the action-filled original screenplay by George Callahan was based upon the copyrighted stories published in the Shadow Magazine. The Joe Kaufman production rates a warm hand as an all-around enertaining film.
SCHOOL FOR ACTOR

Barbara Reed is the cinema actress who astounded filmgoers when she announced her retirement from the screen at the early age of twenty-one. “I’m not the type for Hollywood,” was the vein of Barbara’s statement as she decided to join up with the renowned California ceramic colony.
