ALL TIME GREATS “MERE'S A SWELL CONTEST... Fans of Western Motion Pictures are particularly loyal—as witness how the Great Western Stars go on and on. Above are pictured six of the ALL-TIME WESTERN GREATS! Here’s a swell one-shot contest mat of above available from Monogram Pictures Exploitation Department, 4376 Sunset Drive, Hollywood. It’s a cinch to plant because of the picture value of the people in it. All will immediately spot HART, MIX, JONES, etc., but the immortal DUSTIN FARNUM (upper left hand corner) star of “THE SQUAW MAN,” “LIGHT OF THE WESTERN STARS,” etc., will be just tough enough to make it a contest to get them all correct. You can give passes for allcorrect lists, regardless of the number of winners. It will stir up a lot of interest. Naturally tie in HOOT and KEN and “WILDHORSE STAMPEDE” and the fact that this is their first appearance together in one picture. Correct answers are Dustin Farnum, William S. Hart, Tom Mix, Buck Jones, Ken Maynard and Hoot Gibson. RADIO REACHES HARD-TO-GET $$ It has been said of RADIO that it reaches out and gets those hard-to-get dollars, the folks who aren’t regular picture goers—for the very reason that they stay at home and listen to their radios. This has been proven by the tremendous success of all intelligent RADIOPICTURE merchandising, where the local station and its particular audiences are appealed to directly in connection with the picture being exploited. The success of the many western radio programs such as “The Lone Ranger,” “Red Ryder,’ “The Old Ranger,’ etc., proves the appeal of the Old West to radio listeners. Buy yourself a few spot announcements on your local station, and try and get them either right before or right after your station’s western radio program. Tell them that HOOT GIBSON and KEN MAYNARD, whom many of them haven’t seen since they were kids, are TOGETHER in “Wildhorse Stampede’—follow the general line of HOOT and KEN’S letter to all exhibitors elsewhere on these pages. Many oldtimers are still kids at heart. And many of them have kids now. You’ll be amazed at the response. Hoot Gibson and Ken Maynard (remember ’em, fellers?) signed up today as partners in the injun siaying business. In eight movies a year, henceforth, theyll gang up on the bad man. They'll make him unhand the gal and give back her pappy’s gold mine. And that’s news. Important news. Hoot and Ken are two of the biggest names in the picture business. Year after year, since 1915, the loyal fans of Hoot and Ken have been paying their way in to see them chase the villains across the sagebrush. For the last three or four years there was a hiatus in their movie careers because somebody got the idea that a horse opry star ought to strum a mandolin, look at the property moon and croon about his hosses. Hoot never twanged a mandolin in his life. Sissy stuff. Ken could sing, all right, but only at home. He never let down his customers with a tonsil exercise. “And all of a sudden,” said Hoot, “somebody seemed to have decided that maybe cowboys ought to ride horses.” “Instead of just braying about love,” added Ken. “So we’re back making movies again,’ said Hoot. “Oldtime, rip-snorting wild westerns.” Messrs. Gibson and Maynard are among the few genuine horsemen left in Hollywood. When they race across the gullies hell-bent-for-leather you can be sure there are no doubles in the saddles. They’re under contract now to producer Bob Tansey, who’ll make their pictures for Monogram release. The gal they’ll save from a fate worse than death eight times every year is the beauteous Miss Betty Miles, who’s no slouch on horseback herself. So we got to talking to Hoot and Ken about some secrets of the trade. They told tales that could get us in the legal soup for about $80,000,000 if we reported what they said, with names included. So if you don’t mind, we’il leave out the names. They said they knew a famous western star who needed two men and a stepladder when he got on his horse. They said all he could do was sit on the horse. They said that he had a double who did all the riding and who earned twice as much salary as the great star. Once, they said, the boys ganged up on the star and first thing he knew his horse was galloping. So he fell off and conked his head and threatened mayhem for anybody who told his fans. The customers never did learn, and this star still is making movies at the same old stand with the same old double. “Not that we blame the actors,” said Hoot. “A job is a job, but it is sort of a shame to fool the customers.” While the guitar playing era of western movies was at its height, Hoot and Ken entertained their loyal public at circuses, rodeos and vaudeville theaters. They figured that last year, between them, they played before some 2,000,000 people. Hoot’s getting a little gray now, but Ken’s hair is as black and shiny as ever. “And we’re not worried about our fans forgetting us,’ Ken said. “The youngsters who used to see our pictures on Saturday afternoons still like our shows. They’re grown men now and they’ve got kids and it looks like we’ll go on forever, We hope.” TWO of The Foremost Westera Stars In The History of Motion Pictures! HOOT GIBSON AND KEN MAYNARD TOGETHER!
