Not only were Serling’s memorable television shows on “Playhouse ’90” generally regarded as among the best TV drama ever done, but his series “Twilight Zone” is on favorite lists of millions of viewers. Now, Serling has come up with a motion picture script, an infrequent assignment for him, due to the busy schedule he still maintains for TV. The script was for the latest Frank Sinatra film “Assault On A Queen” which opens ...... BEREMOR tees acaters theatre. The film is a Sinatra Enterprises-Seven Arts production for Paramount Pictures release. “Virna Lisi stars with Sinatra,” said Serling in a recent interview, “and along with Tony Franciosa, Richard Conte and some other bad types, they resurrect a submarine from World War II and try to heist the Queen Mary.” Why has Serling been away from the large screen for a while? “Well, first television is a demanding medium. Between ‘Twilight Zone’ and my last series ‘The Loner’ with Lloyd Bridges, I didn’t have time enough to play with the kids. During the last few years the only other movie script I’d done was ‘Seven Days in May’.” “Assault On A Queen,” according to Serling, was a major challenge. “No one had been able to ‘lick’ the Jack Finney book, which was a best-seller a few years ago. It had been tried several ways. But I decided to make it a straight adventure film and it seems to have worked out pretty well. At least Sinatra tells me he’s happy with it. Now that “The Loner” has bitten the cathode dust, Serling says that he plans to get back into the movie script writing business with both feet. There are scripts planned for three major studios, according to the versatile writer. “I’m also trying to complete an anthology of short stories for a paperback publisher and there’s a play I’ve been trying to finish for the past seven years.” No rest for the weary. The film is a Seven Arts-Sinatra Enterprises production for Paramount release. “Stars are born overnight,” claims Conte, ‘because of some facet of their personality which clicks with the public. It can be a sexy pair of legs, a trick voice, or some chemical reaction. Suddenly, the fan mail begins to pour in.” It is then, says Conte, that the producers begin checking properties to serve as the proper showcases for the current public choice. Conte says he has known tremendously talented actors and actresses who for years have been at the top of their craft and have never reached star status. “Many times,” according to the actor, “you’ve heard people say ‘I’ve seen that actor in a hundred pictures but I can’t remember his name.’ Yet a new girl in a tight sweater will be remembered. “You may he the best actor in the world,’ Conte feels, “but that isn’t enough as far as the public is concerned. You must have some added quality which strikes you right off the screen. Either you have it or you don’t and if you do ' —bang!—you’ve got it made.” Mat iD Still #20034/3 A LIVING LEGEND — Frank Sinatra, crooner, actor, and ‘chairman of the board,’ stars with beautiful Virna Lisi in an off-beat adventure story, ‘“Assault On A Queen,” a Sinatra Enterprises-Seven Arts production for Paramount release opening ...... Theatre. From a secreen Frank Sinatra, Ksq.: Crooner, Actor, Chairman of the Board with a Living Legend! The audience sits hushed. Teenagers clasp each other’s hands, middleagers smile with reminiscence and oldsters nod fondly. The Voice is at work, crooning his own special magic to each of them, each one convinced that the song is just for him. The audience is the same—the teenagers, the middle group and the older group, but the place is different. No longer a night club or a concert hall, we’re in a motion picture theatre as a slim, dark man in uniform races for a train that he never catches. The audience sighs, collectively. They were racing for the train, too. They were involved with the music. The crooner and the actor, the singer and the man running for the train are the same man, Frank Sinatra. Perhaps no other entertainer in the history of show business has ever had as multi-faceted a career and has cut across so wide a segment of the audience. As a New York dise jockey once put it: “Frank Sinatra is ‘The Chairman of the Board’.” And he is that—all things to all men, the top, the king, the class of the game. Starred with him are the Italian actress Virna Lisi who made a memorable motion picture debut popping out of a cake in front of Jack Lemmon in “How to Murder Your Wife,” and Richard Conte and Tony Franciosa. The film was a joint enterprise of Sinatra’s company, Sinatra Enterprises and Seven Arts and is being released by Paramount Pictures. The years roll by for Frank Sinatra and the pictures, too. Not all of them memorable, to be sure, but all of them carrying an authentic piece of the man regarded as the number one entertainer in the world. It’s a long way back from the days of Hoboken and gin mill singing to the Pied Pipers and 'Tommy Dorsey to the hysterical girls at the Paramount to near oblivion and then Maggio in “From Here to Eternity.” All of it runs together in the mind when Sinatra’s name is mentioned. All of it and his two wives, Nancy and Ava, his children, his headline making, his brilliant recordings, his concerts, his motion pictures. On a recent television documentary, Sinatra summed up his career with CBS’ Walter Cronkite by proclaiming that he’d been lucky to have been allowed to do what he loved and to have been paid weil for it, besides. Sinatra has always been a man to do what he loved and to not mind the consequences. His latest film, “Assault On A Queen” is in the Sinatra vein of “Von Ryan’s Express,” the adventure thriller with no holds barred and the audience at the edge of their seats. Sinatra portrays an adventurer who plots with others to resurrect a World War II UBoat and pirate the Queen Mary as the luxury liner steams for Nassau in the Bahamas. Miss Lisi is an adventuress with similar larceny on her mind who becomes romantically involved with Sinatra. Off screen or on, Frank Sinatra will continue to be a living legend, adding lustre to a distinguished career and even new facets each time around. 8 REVERSAL!
