COLUMN ITEMS THE MARRYING KIND—At long last, Elvis Presley seems to be ready for matrimony. The star of Paramount’s ‘“Paradise—Hawaiian Style,” which opens ........ at the ns sss eM Theatre, claims he’s ready to stop playing the field and is looking for the right girl to marry and to raise a family with. Elvis is 31. However, don’t believe the “inside” stories that Elvis is “that way” about his co-star Suzanna Leigh. She may snuggle up to him in the Hal Wallis’ film, but in real life, her chief male interest is British heir Ian Heath. Also appearing with Elvis and not rated much of a chance to snare him are Irene Tsu, Linda Wong, Marianna Hill and Julie Parrish. WHAT A WAY TO GO! Ask Elvis Presley, star of Paramount’s “Paradise—Hawaiian Style,” which opens pe. tas Ab CHE arate eaAUre, where he likes to say goodbye and chances are he’ll put in a loud vote for Hawaii’s Polynesian Cultural Center. At a strictly private affair after completing the filming of the Hal Wallis’ Technicolor production, Elvis was given a farewell party, during which he rubbed noses with 25 Maori maidens, following which 125 native girls from Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, Tahiti, Samoa and Hawaii took turns embracing him and kissing him on the lips. Shooting the film wasn’t exactly painful either. Appearing as his assorted love interests are Suzanna Leigh, Marianna Hill, Julie Parrish, Irene Tsu and Linda Wong. GOING BY THE RULES—Lakeside caddie master Eddie Gannon laid down four tests for a good caddie, and Julie Parrish’s candidate passed with flying colors. He kept his eye on the ball, kept ahead of his player, found the ball and didn’t talk. During the filming of Paramount’s “Paradise—Hawaiian Style,” which opens ...... BEANO ecu. was Theatre, Elvis Presley’s manager Col. Tom Parker instituted drastic security measures to protect the star from his at times overzealous fans. Policemen were assigned to guard all entrances, elevators and corridors of the Ilikai Hotel, where Elvis stayed in Honolulu. But it took a bikini-clad 16-year-old girl to attempt and succeed at a daredevil means of entry. She sneaked into his sitting room by slowly making her way 120 feet along the outside of the building at the 22nd floor level. Naturally, when she got there, he was out. So impressed was everyone at her ingenuity and courage, no charges were preferred and she was given an autographed picture of her star-hero. “Paradise—Hawaiian Style’’ was produced by Hal Wallis and directed by Michael Moore. Theatre, didn’t seem to care whether the girl was a blonde, brunette or redhead. He did indicate he’d prefer a looker. He was specific on only one point. “She’s got to be an American,” he said decisively. Which seems to pretty well dispose of a girl he’s been linked with frequently of late, Suzanna Leigh, his lovely blonde co-star in the Hal Wallis production. Miss Leigh meets every qualification and then some, with one unfortunate exception. She’s English. Presley did not indicate whether he might accept a naturalized American. Over the years, the rock-and-roll king and teenage idol has been linked romantically with a host of lovelies in all categories. A few of his more popularly reported girlfriends are: Ann-Margret, Natalie Wood, Kim Novak, Rita Moreno, Dolores Hart, Las Vegas showgirl Dottie Harmony, Judv Spreckles, divorced wife No. 6 of sugar heir Adolph B. Spreckles, Jr., Joan Blackman and non-performers June Juanico of Biloxi, Miss., and Anita Wood of his home town of Memphis. Other Presley preferences for the future Mrs. Elvis are: She should neither drink nor smoke; she should be a high school graduate but not a college girl; she should be well-bred, warm-hearted, patient and understanding; she shouldn’t use makeup; she should be healthy and energetic and a real homemaker and she must be a loving and devoted wife and mother and willing to raise a large family. “In addition,” Elvis says of this so-far non-existent paragon, “she’s got to like the things I like.” These latter include pork chops, banana sandwiches, the Big Beat, cars, motorcycle riding, movies, amusement parks and people. He doesn’t care if she’s from a city or a small town, if she’s an actress, a secretary or an airline hostess as long as she isn’t anything but Mrs. Presley after the wedding. Sensuous Marianna Hill Stacks Up Intellectually 160 |. Q. Plus! If you ask whether Marianna Hill is destined to attain permanent Hollywood stardom, perhaps tne best answer might be: “It figures.” But, unlike the average anatomical wonder, Marianna’s assets are intellectual as well as_ physical. With statistics like 36-23-36, you may well ask, who needs intellect. But, just in case she should need it, Marianna’s I.Q. measures in at an impressive 160. She admits that she does need it every once in a while. “T admire masculinity,” she commented, “but every once in a while I wish there were more fellows who just like to talk.” Marianna will shortly be seen as one of Elvis Presley’s well-selected love interests in Paramount’s “Paradise—Hawaiian, Style,” which opens 5, apaiveis Ptubhe Mois. bneatre an which film she vies with Suzanna Leigh, Julie Parrish, Irene Tsu and Linda Wong for the affections of the rock-and-roll hero. The 21-year-old Marianna made her feature film starring debut in Howard Hawks “Red Line 7000,” a Paramount release and made such a favorable impression, she was given a long-term Paramount contract. Hal Wallis was delighted at the opportunity to use her in ‘‘Paradise —Hawaiian Style.” Marianna is one of the many stars who came to features via the television route. She co-starred with Barry Sullivan on “The Tall Man” series and was spotted by Howard Hawks for her role in “Red Line 7000” when she appeared opposite Red Buttons in an episode of “The Greatest Show On Earth.” She was born in San Francisco, but grew up in LaJolla, Encino, Spain and Canada, eventually returning to LaJolla and finally entering Villa Montemar Girls School in San Diego where she was graduated at the age of 16%. For the next two years she studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. then went to Hollywood as a TV actress. “T’ve just moved into a new apartment,” she said, “and you can’t walk around the place without falling over some antique. And all my books!”’ “Awareness and aliveness make a girl appealing,’ she said. “It’s not just a matter of being wellendowed physically. Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor are genuine sex goddesses. Sing’n and Swing’n Presley Deserts That Familiar Guitar In ‘‘Paradise—Hawaiian Style’’ In ‘“‘Paradise—Hawaiian Style,” Paramount’s Technicolor re lease which opens .......... RE RNG eu a Theatre, Elvis Presley gets to sing 10 new songs. But, in only one of them does he accompany himself on the guitar. Is the man whom the American Music Corporation once credited with starting the great guitar boom, abandoning the insturment which helped bring him to prominence. It certainly seems that way. The AMC says that 7 million Americans now play the guitar chiefly because of Elvis. In 1956, the year he exploded on the American public, some 300,000 guitars were sold. Last year, guitar sales figures reached 1,065,000, one-third the number of all musical instruments sold in this country. But, sad to relate as far as AMC is concerned, Elvis’ guitar playing has been following the route taken by his sideburns. In 1956 they measured three inches. Today, only one-fourth of an inch remains. In the Hal Wallis’ production of “Paradise—Hawaiian Style,” Elvis strums a ukulele with two of his songs. For two of the others, he uses his hands for nothing more than to hold a girl. On the remaining five, done with pan-Polynesian choruses, he beats a Tahitian toere log, stomps a pair of Tongan deruas (bamboo pipes) on the ground, rattles the Samoan autas and Hawaiian puilis (in each case, bamboo sticks). “People seem to think I’m married to the guitar,” he said. ‘The truth is, ’m not very good with it. I’ve seen stories about how I ‘beat up a storm’ with it, but I usually have another guitar player backing me up when I play.” When he returned from Hawaii, Elvis brought back a toere log and pairs of deruas, autas, puilis and uli ulis (all members of the drum family) from the Mormon Church’s Polynesian Cultural Center. In “Paradise—Hawaiian Style,” Presley plays a helicopter pilot. Appearing with him are Suzanna Leigh, James Shigeta, Donna Butterworth and Marianna Hill.
