He wings across the Pacific to Hawaii, where he was born; a mere passenger on the plane, while over the credit titles his voice is heard singing ‘‘Paradise, Hawaiian Style.”’ His Hawaiian buddy, Danny Kohana (James Shigeta), a pilot in business for himself, throws a welcoming luau with his wife, Betty (Jan Shepard), and their four children. Nine-year-old Jan (Donna Butterworth) sings and ‘‘Uncle’”’ Rick joins in. Rick hitches a ride as Danny flies a man named Cubberson (Grady Sutton) to a convention at the Maui Sheraton, and proposes he and Danny start a charter service with two helicopters. Danny says no, but Rick persuades a Hawaiian hostess, Lehua Kawena (Linda Wong), to send them passengers. Cubberson discovers he’s at the wrong hotel—the convention is on Kauai Island. There, Rick meets another flame, Lani (Marianna Hill), whom he also persuades to send passengers. When both girls line up customers, Danny is convinced. Danrick Airways goes into business and the owners engage Judy Hudson (Suzanna Leigh) as a secretary, nicknaming her Friday. Rick takes off to appoint another girl as a passenger agent, this one at the Polynesian Cultural Center. The day’s show is about to begin, and Pua (Irene Tsu) coaxes Rick into it. They sing ‘‘Drums of the Islands.”’ Next he enlists Joanna (Julie Parrish), a Caucasian beauty working at the Kahala Hilton. In a copter ride with Joanna, he loses control and doesn’t regain it till the careening chopper has forced an auto into a ditch. Rick takes Joanna to a steak house. Friday is there with Andy Lowell (Don Collier), who becomes offensively amorous. Rick intervenes. This starts a free-for-all. The next day, Rick learns that the driver of the car was Donald Belden (John Doucette) of the Federal Aviation Agency. This means trouble. Friday tells Rick that Lani has a couple waiting on Kauai to be flown to Honolulu. But Danny has promised Jan a copter ride. and Rick substitutes by taking the little girl along. They land in front of a surfside eating place. They're early and Lani persuades Rick to take Jan and her to Moonlight Beach. There, piqued because Rick avoids her advances, Lani buries the key to the helicopter ignition. All three dig in vain. They spend the night there. Danny finds them and won't accept Rick’s story. He says the partnership is dissolved. On Rick’s return, he finds that Danny and Jan have not returned. Friday blames Rick. Rick and Friday go after them. They find Danny’s ‘copter’ down, Jan all right, but Danny with a broken leg. Danny and Rick are friends again, but the newspapers have reported the rescue, and the aviation board may ground Rick forever. Learning that Belden is to be guest of honor at a welcoming festival, Rick decides to go and plead his case. Dancing with Friday, Rick is shocked to see Lehua, Lani, Pua and Joanna there too. Recognizing him, they pull him into a number with them. After that, he finds Belden who assures him that because of the mitigating circumstance of the rescue he will not lose his license. The jubilant pilot rejoins his party. He sings ‘‘This Is My Heaven,” directly to Friday.
