‘ODD’ SELLING IDEAS COMPUTER DATING CONTEST: One of the big things in our modern day of living is a
system whereby two people match themselves perfectly via computer dating services. Almost every major city throughout the United States has such services, and it gives you a good outlet for promoting THE ODD COUPLE. Contact a computer dating service in your area, and via a radio, newspaper or T.V. contest, have them find a young couple who will be most idealy suited for each other and make them THE ODD COUPLE on behalf of the opening of the film. Perhaps you can match a young man who likes blondes, Beatle music and engineering books with a brunette who's crazy for Bach and J. D. Salinger—they should have as little in common as possible. This couple would represent your opening of the film. They would receive promoted merchandise and chances to be interviewed by local newspaper, television and radio personalities before becoming the guests of honor at your opening of THE ODD COUPLE. This is a stunt that—by using a lot of tongue in cheek—could bring you a lot of advanced publicity for your engagement.
ODD COUPLE BOWLING GAMEs some of the wildest people in the world are disc jockeys,
and every city in the United States has a group of these deejays who will do anything for a laugh. Contact the radio station where a group of kooky deejays broadcast from and suggest that they get together and become THE ODD COUPLE Bowling Team. What they do is to challenge their listeners to a bowling game, offering promoted merchandise if they are beaten. Listeners would have to write in and tell why they think they can beat the disc jockeys in bowling. The four most original letters would be picked as the challengers. The disc jockyes could then invite their fans to the bowling alley to cheer them on to victory. If you do use this stunt, remember to plaster the bowling alley with ODD COUPLE posters, stills, etc. containing your playdate information. A stunt like this could be very popular and get your engagement a multitude of advance publicity.
ODD COUPLE SALE: Many church and civic groups hold white elephant sales during this time of year. If one of these groups is planning such a sale now, contact this group and suggest that they make it an ODD COUPLE special. The way to do this is to offer two unrelated objects for the price of one (i.e. a pair of shoes—one man’s and one woman’s or unmatching bookends). At this sale you could offer door prizes consisting of quest passes to see THE ODD COUPLE, soundtrack album, etc.
ODD COUPLE CONTEST: tere’s a radio contest that will really work. Have your local deejays
ask their listeners to send in post cards, naming the Oddest Couple of personalities that they can think of—
Jackie Gleason and Twiggy; Phyllis Diller and Rock Hudson; etc. The funniest replies will win guest tickets to see THE ODD COUPLE.
