PUBLICITY SYNOPSIS (Not for Publication) ommander Reger (VAN HEFLIN) is commander of the mystery surface raider, Atlantis, a ( heavily armed German ship which masquerades as a merchaniman and flies whatever flag is convenient. Reger has been creating havoc with British shipping by approaching enemy ships under the guise of being a friend, then suddenly revealing his guns and forcing the other ship to surrender without sending an SOS or describing the attacker. A man who believes in making warfare as humane as possible, Reger always attempts to take passengers and crew safely aboard his ship before sinking their vessel. Admiral Russell (CHARLES LAUGHTON) of the British Security Lanes Command deduces finally that the mystery raider must be a surface vessel, and orders British merchantmen to cable immediately the description of all vessels approaching them for any reason. Lieutenant Krueger (JOHN ERICSON), a fanatic Nazi member of the Atlantis crew, is in favor of sinking on sight all British ships with crews and passengers aboard, but Reger coldly overrules him. Disquised as a Japanese passenger-carrying ship, the Atlantis stops the British merchantman ‘City of Liverpool,’ shoots off her antenna, and before sinking her, takes aboard her crew, including Captain Windsor (LIAM REDMOND). When the Atlantis halts the ‘Abdullah, the Master of the ship (GREGOIRE ASLAN) hoists a surrender flag, then stupidly fires on the Atlantis, forcing her to fire back and cause injury and death among crew and passengers. The wireless operator manages to send a message to the British Admiralty, giving the Abdullah’s position. Among the survivors from the Abdullah are Zizi (MYLENE DEMONGEOT) a French entertainer; Professor Braun (GIANMARIA VOLONTE) and his pregnant wife, Sara (ELEONORA ROSSI DRAGO), Jewish refugees; a Negro nun (EDITH PETERS); a clown (PHILO HAUSER) and his assistant (MORA ORFEI). The signal sent by the Abdullah has told the Admiralty approximately where the Atlantis is, but the German raider outwits and sinks a cruiser sent after her and later eludes a trap set by Russell. The Admiral, along with Colonel Howard (CECIL PARKER) of the Intelligence Service, assigns an American Lieutenant (ALEX NICOL) to obtain from the German naval headquarters in Paris a copy of a chart which will enable them to break the special Atlantis code so they can determine where the raider is. The Lieutenant, because of his amazing resemblance to the German officer who has the chart in his office, manages to obtain it. Aboard the Atlantis, the Master of the Abdullah, for his own purposes, is threatening to expose Braun as a Jew to the Captain, and Paco (Folco Lulli), an opportunistic “permanent” prisoner aboard the ship, is making passes at Zizi. She is more interested in Krueger, until the German officer reveals his strong pro-Nazi feelings. Sara has her baby with the sympathetic help of the ship’s doctor, Hartmann (DIETER EPPLER). The Abdullah’s master denounces Braun, but Reger has the master thrown into a cell and assures the Jewish couple that no harm will befall them. Making contact with the Norwegian ship ‘Oslo,’ the Atlantis transfers all prisoners for transport to a neutral port. Most of them shake hands with Reger as they leave. Windsor, because he is ill, stays aboard. A short time later, as the Oslo sails away, she strikes a mine, probably German, breaks in two and sinks immediately. Reger attempts to pick up survivors, but is unable to find any. Now in possession of the German chart code, Russell intercepts a message to Reger and dispatches a cruiser to where the Atlantis is refueling a U-Boat. Reger tries to disguise the Atlantis as a British merchantman, but the cruiser, on Russell’s orders, opens fire. Reger permits his ship to be sunk without returning fire, hoping that the British will not be certain they have sunk the right ship, and will continue the hunt for the mysterious surface raider. The presence of the submarine causes the cruiser to depart without picking up any of the survivors, but the U-Boat saves Reger and many of his crew. Windsor is killed aboard the Atlantis by British shrapnel. Hearing the report of the encounter Russell admits: “| may never know whether the ship that went down was really the Atlantis or a German auxiliary unit. | shall have to keep on looking for the Atlantis, using forces needed elsewhere. If | were the captain of the Atlantis, | could not have wished a better end.” CAST ROUDDS. «crt siaraa mente’ VAN HEFLIN Colonel Howard ...... The film, which dramatizes as eventful a sea voyage as was ever taken, co-stars the shapely French beauty, Mylene Demongeot, John Ericson, Foleo Lulli, Cecil Parker, Alex Nicol and Eleonora Rossi Drago. The story was adapted from the autobiographical account by the German Admiral Bernhard Rogge of the voyage of the Atlantis, which was one of twelve surface raiders used by the Nazis during the war, and by far the most successful. Provisioned for a journey of one year, the Atlantis actually was on the high seas for 655 days on a trip which took her more than five times around the equator—the longest sea voyage in human history, and the most confounding to the enemy. Van Heflin has the role of the commander of the Atlantis, Laughton his British ‘Waterloo,’ who finally is responsible for solving the mystery of the German’s method of operation, which proved so costly to the Allied cause. The film concerns itself with the bizarre masquerading activities of the Atlantis, with the people who _ became its prisoners and with the suspenseful cat-and-mouse action that eventually trapped it. Marine scenes Still No. 47029-21 French Entertainer Livens Voyage of the film were shot on the Ionian Sea with location headquarters in Syracuse, Sicily. The film concerns the activities of the heavily armed Atlantis which, disguised as a merchantman flying whatever flag is convenient at the time, would approach quite close to her prey and then spring into action. Coupled with the element of surprise, one shot across the other ship’s bows, with a stern warning for her not to use her wireless, would suffice. The commander would then have all passengers and crew transferred to the Atlantis, since he was a humane man opposed to Nazi methods, and either sink the other ship or put a German crew aboard her and send her to a German or “friendly” port. How the British finally located the Atlantis and put a stop to her deadly tactics and what happened to the people involved comprise motion picture entertainment at its most dramatic and _ suspenseful, with enough breathtaking action to satisfy the most thrill-hungry movie fans.
