REALISTIC SEA EPIC ‘UNDER TEN FLAGS’, DELIVERS CARGO OF THRILLING ACTION (Review) That truth is stranger than fiction—and often much more exciting—is proved with a vengeance in the new Dino De Laurentiis production, “Under Ten Flags,” which unfurled yesterday at the ....... Theatre. The Paramount release, starring Van Heflin and Charles Laughton, is based on the autobiographical account by Admiral Bernhard Rogge of the voyage of the German surface raider, the Atlantis, during World War II— an account of events so fantastic and exciting, it was only a matter of time before they were dramatized in motion picture form. De Laurentiis, one of the top European producers, whose “War and Peace” is still being talked about, has done that job brilliantly, re-creating on film the exciting story of the Atlantis, the man who commanded her, and the people who were her “prisoners.” Van Heflin portrays the commander of the heavily armed vessel which, disguised as a merchantman and flying whatever flag was convenient at the time, preyed on British shipping with fantastic success. She sank or captured twenty-two ships and took a total of 13800 prisoners. In behalf of the Allied cause, she had to be located and sunk and the job fell to the British Admiral Russell, played by Charles Laughton as only he can. The suspense that accompanies the accomplishment of that job, is motion picture entertainment at its most exciting. The newest French beauty to hit the screen, Mylene Demongeot, who has garnered considerable publicity in the American press, portrays Zizi, a nightclub entertainer who is among the people captured by the Atlantis. Others in important roles are John Ericson, Folco Lulli, Cecil Parker, Alex Nicol and Eleonora Rossi Drago. There are many other fine players in supporting roles who contribute to the development of the story and to making “Under Ten Flags” an unusually absorbing and action-packed film. SS * * Although the stars of the Dino De Laurentiis production, “Under Ten Flags,” now at the ........ Theatre, are billed as Van Heflin and Charles Laughton, there is a third, unbilled star—a ship called the Atlantis, whose extraordinary, true story is told in the Paramount release. Based on the autobiography of its commander, Capt. Bernhard Rogge, “Under Ten Flags” tells of the activities of the Atlantis, the most successful of the twelve surface raiders used by the Nazis during World War II. So heavy a toll did the Atlantis take of British shipping that it was of vital importance to the Allied cause to locate it and sink it at any cost. Van Heflin appears as the Atlantis’ commander, Laughton as the admiral whose job it was to eliminate her. How the task was accomplished is the crux of this suspenseful and action-packed film.
