This suspense-filled western is headed by a top cast which includes Rory Calhoun, Virginia Mayo, Lon Chaney, John Agar, Richard Arlen, Merry Anders as well as a host of exciting newcomers. “We checked hundreds of hats,” says Calhoun, “old, new, battered, dusty, twisted, torn and stained. Some of them, used in films twenty years ago, had lots of ‘character.’ Finally, we hit upon one, which seemed to reveal the type of gunfighter role I play in the film.” Lyles, who specializes in outdoor dramas, had Calhoun take the hat home and wear it around the house for a week before filming began. Explains Lyles, “a western hat is definitely part of the character. There’s the old saying about the ‘black hats’—the heavies—and the ‘white hats’—the heroes. I like my players to feel at home in their outfit to look as though they had worked in it, lived in it, slept in it, as the real cowboys did.” As for a white horse, Calhoun by-passed it. “It would be too conspicuous,” he says. “In the film I portray a gun-fighter, and no gunfighter in his right mind would advertise his presence riding around on a white horse.” “Young Fury” is about a gunfighter who makes his last stand in the town that once banished him. Clint McCoy (Rory Calhoun) is the gun-fighter who was thrown out of town after killing the man he found with his wife. He returns after many years of being away to fight it out against the Dawson’s gang, with whom he once rode. Still PORE) 1 RORY CALHOUN stars as a renegade gunfighter in the new A. C.
