Elece Sis: codnee ete See ee cab Richard Widmark and George Chakiris co-star in the exciting drama. When he was a child, Yul visited Tokyo and travelled on to Kyoto, the picturesque one-time capital of Japan, where he spent the spring and summers to escape the violent dust storms that swept his home in Peking, China. The aura of mystery, fascination, fierce virility and exotic appeal that surrounds Brynner as a performer is not all theatrical illusion. He was born on Sakhalin Island in the Japanese Sea and his family subsequently settled in Peking. Yul was sent to Paris for his education and eventually joined a group of young musicians who earned their living singing and playing balalaikas. He became an acrobat with a circus and then returned to Paris where he joined the Pitoeff repertory company and finally came to the United States in 1941. He worked in New York as a French language announcer for the Voice of America. In 1945, Brynner hit Broadway in “Lute Song” with Mary Martin. “Dark Eyes” followed, but it was his portrayal of the Siamese potentate in “The. King and I” which rocketed him to international fame. It was also the first time he had been seen on stage with the shaved head that is now his trademark. In 1953, Cecil B. DeMille signed him to play the Pharaoh in “The Ten Commandments,” a role which proved to be more dynamic than his rather inconspicuous movie debut four years earlier as a gangster—with hair—in “Port of New York.” Brynner also filmed the movie version of “The King and |” and immediately became one of the most popular stars in the world, winning the coveted Academy Award for the best performance by an actor. His many subsequent films in clude “The Buccaneer,” “Anastasia,” “The Brothers Karamazov,” “The Journey,” “Solomon and Sheba,” “The Magnificent Seven,” “Taras Bulba” and “Kings of The Sun.” Still FF A-22 Mat 1B Beautiful Shirley Knight plays Richard Widmark’s _ ill-fated wife in “Flight From Ashiya,”’ opening in Eastmancolor and Panavision ...... at the..... Versatility Word For ‘Ashiya’ Star Richard Widmark Richard Widmark, starring in “Flight From Ashiya,” which opens Spates nish at the ........Theatre, through United Artists release, owes his identification with heavy roles to his electrifying debut as the psychopathic gangster in “Kiss of Death.” Critics hailed him at the time as a sensational “discovery” but his sudden rise to stardom was solidly backed by years of experience in radio and on the New York stage. His later pictures show a talent which embraces a wide range of dramatic abilities. “Flight From Ashiya” co-stars Yul Brynner and George Chakiris and is presented in Panavision and Eastmancolor. Widmark has portrayed a wartime hero (“Halls of Montezuma’’) , a rugged adventurer (“The Law and Jake Wade”), a public health doctor (“Panic in the Streets’’), the valiant Jim Bowie (“The Alamo”), a white man brought up by Indians (“The Last Wagon’), a staunch defender of the West (“Two Rode Together”), a comic harassed husband (“Tunnel of Love’), and a dedicated prosecutor (“Judgment at Nuremberg”) to scan only a few of his varied roles. A few years ago, Widmark the actor, became producer Widmark. “Time Limit” and “The Secret Ways” were the first two pictures in which he served as both producer and star. Formerly a dramatics teacher at Lake Forest University, Widmark talked himself into actually participating in the theatre and came to New York. Soon he became established as a regular performer on most of the network radio shows. The “treadmill,” as he describes it, provided solid schooling in all types of characterizations. Acting in such shows as “Inner Sanctum,” “Cavalcade,” “Grand Central Station,’ “The Kate Smith Hour,” “Columbia Workshop” and “Theatre Guild of the Air’—hectic as it was, yielded a profitable existance and invaluable training. Proving his acting abilities in the radio medium, he was able to win a role on Broadway as the juvenile in the comedy, “Kiss and Tell.” His debut firmly established a theatrical career and more plays followed. When he was a successful Broadway star, he won the now famous role in “Kiss of Death” and has been a box-office favorite ever since. Hardship! The fashion world calls for slimmer and slimmer female figures— and Suzy Parker’s $100,000 a year torso is the most famous of them all. And I find it stimulating to work on the actual location of a story, with foreign crews—even though this poses the big problem of the language barrier. But I figure if the U.N. can function with interpreters, so can moviemakers!” Mat 2€ Peer ae atthe ......
