mountainous waves, attempting to transfer women and children to life boats. Three officers of the U.S. Air Rescue Service are dispatched from Ashiya to the disaster area. These men are: Sgt. Mike Takashima (Yul Brynner), Colonel Glenn Stevenson (Richard Widmark) and Lt. John Gregg (George Chakiris). As their plane heads for the wreck,
their individual stories are told in flashback.
Mike, the son of an American mother and a Japanese father, has had a tragic love affair with a young Algerian girl (Daniéle Gaubert). Carroll (Suzy Parker), a Red Cross
nurse, follows Mike from air base to air base trying to make him forget this first love.
Colonel Stevenson, famous in the Air Force, is lonely and embittered. As a civilian pilot in the Philippines, he marries Caroline Gordon (Shirley Knight) and when World War I! breaks out, they are interned by the Japanese. Caroline and their baby both die in the concentration camp and from that day Stevenson grows constantly inward,
closing out the rest of the world. Lieutenant Grega is a helicopter pilot who marries a Japanese girl (Eiko Taki).
At the scene of the maritime disaster, their cover plane crashes into the sea and
all aboard are lost. Stevenson, bitter, lost in his wartime memories, refuses to put down
at sea and jeopardize his crew and aircraft in an attempt to aid the slowly sinking
lifeboats. In the last minutes, however, he overcomes his deep prejudices and gives the order for Mike to jump with the rescue equipment. With the help of Lieutenant Gregg, they effect a dramatic rescue on the storm-lashed waves.
