The Story
(Not for Publication)
Joe Moses (ROBERT MITCHUM), circus man, diamond smuggler and quack doctor, is thrown into a river by enraged Africans. Unconscious atop his wagon, he drifts downstream until he is stopped by some bulrushes. There he is rescued and tended by the Rev. Anderson (ALEXANDER KNOX) a missionary, and his daughter Julie (CARROLL BAKER).
Julie is engaged to Robert, the District Commissioner (IAN BANNEN) whose job it is to remove a tribe of natives whose village is directly in the path of a sluiceway being built for a new power dam. The natives do not want to go.
To get supplies to clear out with an elephant pulling his wagon, Joe puts on a magic show, shooting fire from his mouth. This sets fire to a bush. The awe-stricken natives give him the supplies and accept him as a diety. If
anybody is going to lead them to the promised land, says their chief, (ORLAN-:
DO MARTINS) it’s going to be Mister Moses!
Joe tries to run away. But Julie has discovered he is a diamond smuggler and blackmails him into leading the tribe to safety. When the dam is reached Joe performs another miracle with the aid of his elephant, by “parting the waters” in the sluiceway so that the natives may pass over.
Jealous forces take advantage of Joe’s absence to hunt for water, by setting up the old religion with its idols. Upon his return Joe smashes the false gods. After many trails and battles, Joe succeeds in getting the tribe to “the promised land.”
His mission performed, he mounts his elephant and prepares to escape from the District Commissioner who has discovered that he is a smuggler. As he heads for the brush, Julie, who has become enamored of the strange vagabond during the long adventure, hurries after him.
