The Story (Not For Publication)
New York bootlegger Dave The Dude (Glenn Ford) is making a deal with Chicago syndicate overlord Steve Darcey (Sheldon Leonard) and has sent Joy Boy (Peter Falk) and Junior (Mickey Shaughnessy) to find Apple Annie (Bette Davis), a peddler from whom Dude buys an apple every time he wants good luck.
They find Annie drunk. Her daughter, Louise (Ann-Margret), has been living in Spain, under the impression that Annie is really a socialite and Annie has been sending money from kick-backs she gets from all Broadway beggars. Now, however, the girl is coming to New York with her fiance, Carlos (Peter Mann) and his father, Count Romero (Arthur O'Connell). At first Dude is inclined to ignore Annie's plight, but a parade of beggars beg him to work some ‘miracle’ for their beloved Annie. The insistance of Dude's girl friend, Queenie (Hope Lange) tips the scales and Dude sets Annie up in a penthouse with a genuine butler (Edward Everett Horton), who is the only genuine part of the fraud. Queenie brings top fashion and beauty experts in to make Annie over, and the transformation is exquisite to eye and heart. Jovial "judge" Blake (Thomas Mitchell) is routed
from a pool hall and pressed into service as Annie's husband.
Annie and her daughter are tearfully reunited and spend a week together while Dave and his gang are kept busy deflecting the attacks of reporters and Darcey's mobsters. When Count Romero asks for a reception at which to announce the marriage of his son to Annie's daughter, Dave desperately drafts a ballroom full of Runyonesque characters to pose as high society. Police interference almost spoils the party and when it looks as though no one is coming, Annie decides to confess all. At the eleventh hour Dave miraculously arrives not only with the "socialites'’ but with the Governor, Mayor, other officials and their wives. Annie's triumph is absolute. Her daughter and Carlos sail back to Spain, Dave proposes to Queenie, and Annie, now believing in miracles, happily goes back to selling apples on Broadway, the miracle street.
