Fashion Layout (Mat .60) Jennifer Avoids Dry Skin With Own “Facial Cocktail” Most film stars have a favorite method of keeping their com¬ plexions soft and velvety smooth. “They have to,” says Jennifer Jones, “because heavy stage and screen makeup has a tendency to dry out the skin.” Jennifer has a facial cocktail that she thought up for herself and which she says does the trick. On the days she doesn’t have to go to the studio she cleanses her face four times a day with a penetrat¬ ing cream—before breakfast, lunch and dinner and before retiring. When she wipes off the cream, she washes her face with a mild soap and warm water. Using a good foundation with an oil base, Jen¬ nifer then applies fresh makeup. “It not only keeps my skin in good condition,” she says, “but gives me a feeling of starting out fresh on each occasion.” Most Beautiful Cover Girl Helps Selznick Pick Winners During the production of “Since You Went Away,” David 0. Selz¬ nick, who does things his own way and always does them first, scored a beat on Hollywood when he em¬ ployed a girl known as “The Face” as a Feminine Director. The title meant that she was to coach the younger studio players in style and beauty and how not to look into the camera. The girl who won this enviable cognomen of “The Face” was none other than Anita Colby, the beau¬ tiful cover girl whose face has adorned more magazines than any other model in the business. “Since You Went Away” stars Claudette Colbert, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten, Shirley Temple, Monty Woolley, Lionel Barrymore and Robert Walker. The writer was Josephine von Miklos who was in the film colony doing some specialized writing on David 0. Selznick’s saga of the American home front, “Since You Went Away,” which has been held over for a second week at the .... Theatre through United Art¬ ists release. After Pearl Harbor, Mrs. Mik¬ los closed her photographic and commercial designer’s shop in New York and took a war job in a munition plant in New England making time fuses for aerial bombs. While there she made bombs that were shipped to Tunisia. “I have had a hunch,” Mrs. Miklos declared, “that many of the fuses I made were in bombs dropped by the American Air Force in the Tunisia battles, and later in Sicily. I hope some of the bombs were used in bombing Italy. The sooner Italy surrenders, the sooner Hitler will be licked and then my homeland, Austria, will be freed from the Nazis.” Selznick brought Mrs. Miklos to Hollywood after he read her book, “I Took A War Job,” which was published last year. It has been ac¬ claimed by many critics as one of the great stories on the American war effort. Paul McNutt, War Manpower Commissioner, who re¬ viewed the book before publication, praised it highly. Because of her experience, Mrs Miklos was exceptionally well equipped to offer writing aid for some sequences in the touching, emotional drama, “Since You Wen 1- Away,” which is already outdis¬ tancing Selznick’s illustrious pred¬ ecessor, “Gone With the Wind.” The brilliant seven-star cast in¬ cludes Claudette Colbert, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten, Shirley Tem¬ ple, Monty Woolley, Lionel Barry¬ more and Robert Walker, with such popular players as Hattie Mc¬ Daniel, Agnes Moorehead, Alla Nazimova, Albert Basserman and Keenan Wynn among the support¬ ing players. In her personal life, Claudette prefers simplicity at all times, and especially now with a war going on. She has a particular fondness for suits and she claims that her basic war-time wardrobe consists of three suits that carry her along for practically every occasion, bar¬ ring, of course, sports clothes and simple prints for the dog days. The most important of the three suits, according to Claudette, is a so-called man-tailored type which, in a pinch, will do service from early morning until late at night with the aid of good-looking acces¬ sories. This suit is made of a fine, smooth gabardine in a light mocha shade. With this she can easily combine almost any shade of blouse that she prefers in order to change the color scheme. In fact, this basic suit takes on an en¬ tirely different appearance when¬ ever Claudette switches from a white tailored blouse to a delicate shell pink or a soft powder blue With this smartly tailored suit Claudette wears the casual trimmed felt hat that is so becom¬ ing to her. She has one model that she likes so well she’s bought it in various colors to blend with her other accessories. Her second suit is just as simple as the mocha one, only that it is cut on different lines. It is what they call the dressmaker type, fashioned of a soft, navy blue wool fabric, with a slim straight skirt and a brief bolero jacket. With this suit Claudette wears either crisp white lingerie blouses with a frilly jabot effect, or the soft rayon blouses of the Russian type, with long, full sleeves. She claims that she can really go to town with this suit, because navy blue combines easily with almost every color. One of her favorite blouses, however, has a buff back¬ ground in fine challis with an all- over printed oriental design in red, Lucky Actors! Paid For Lounging In Bar It isn’t everybody who gets paid for lushing around in a cocktail bar, but James Bush, Harry Hay¬ den, Robert Middlemas and some 250 extras were reimbursed for doing just that. Although the long evening gown seems to be “out” for the duration, there are some “after dark” affairs when Claudette feels that she just has to dress up. Here is where her French heritage really asserts it- Clothes Help Film Reality Authenticity in the little things helps a lot toward the making of a fine motion picture. That is why David 0. Selznick in his current film, “Since You Went Away,” saw to it that all the small details were handled just right and that they were consistent with the doings of the characters in the story. For instance, instead of having an especially engaged Hollywood designer create the clothes worn by Jennifer Jones and Shirley Temple, the two teen-age Hilton girls of the story, he had the two stars go out to the Hollywood shops to buy the outfits worn in the film. His reason was that the Hilton family is a typical Amer¬ ican family and naturally wears typical American clothes. Jennifer, as an 18-year-old, proves a style tipster with one of her prettiest costumes, a wide¬ shouldered pinafore in sheer navy blue wool, under which she wears a filmy, long-sleeved blouse of sky- blue rayon. “Just change your blouses,” says Jennifer, “and you have a collection of dresses!” Another attractive frock worn by Jennifer has a red and white checked rayon gingham dirndl skirt, topped by a white balloon cloth peasant blouse with eyelet embroidery around the deep, square-cut neck and short full sleeves. A wide doeskin belt in dark blue adds a very effective touch to this country outfit. Shirley, who plays the 15-year- old Brig, is adorable in the simple, striped cotton frocks, the white playsuit, and the pretty print afternoon dresses that she chose for her role. As Anne Hilton, Jane and Brig’s lovely young mother, Clau¬ dette Colbert wears the chic, simply cut dresses that she might wear in her own home. Besides Claudette, Jennifer and Shirley, “Since You Went Away” has Joseph Cotten, Monty Woolley, Lionel Barrymore and Robert Walker cast in stellar roles.
