Story of Average Family In essence, it is a simple story of simple people, Cromwell points out. “It is the story of an aver¬ age home; of work and play; of young love in spring. It is a film full of laughter—and tears, with the laughter predominating,” Cromwell said. The main set of “Since You Went Away” is one of Selznick’s famous “houses” (remember “Tara” in “Gone With the Wind” and Manderlay in “Rebecca”?). For, not satisfied with merely filming the shell of a house, Selznick built a set which could actually be lived in. It was completely fur¬ nished by the world-famous fur¬ niture and interior decorating house of W. J. Sloane, and in¬ cluded such amazing decorations —for a movie set—as water that actually flowed when a tap was turned; radios that really played; flowers that were changed daily; and magazines which were re¬ placed from week to week.
