This is the story of the Hilton family, Anne (Claudette Colbert) and her daughters, Jane (Jennifer Jones) and Brig (Shirley Temple). It touches on the family’s re¬ lationship with their boarder Colonel Smollett (Monty Woolley) and Jane’s romance with the Colonel’s nephew (Robert Walker). In the absence of Mr. Hilton, Anthony Willett (Joseph Cotten), an old friend of Anne’s, becomes the Hilton’s ad¬ visor. He is aided by their faithful maid-of-all-work Fidelia (Hattie McDaniel). Among those who shape the day-to-day events in the story of the Hiltons are a clergyman (Lionel Barry¬ more), youthful Harold Smith (Guy Madison), and shrewish Emily Hawkins (Agnes Moorehead). Diverse scenes in a hospital, a bowling alley, a railroad car, a restaurant and a school form the background for the romance, pathos and drama which fill the lives of this typical American family.
